    Brake pipes and hydraulic handbrake

I had to do a diagram to get it clear in my mind, does this look correct for fitting a hydraulic handbrake?

Is the very rear solid section better clipped to the body of the car or the axle casing? With a flexi pipe in between to allow for axle movement

    Cheers

    Brake pipes and hydraulic handbrake

Basically for a single cylinder setup. Mine is completely braided hose. More expensive but far easier in my mind to do.

Mine was solid pipe from the handbrake to the rear floor pan somewhere around the diff tunnel, the standard position. Then flexi down to the axle with the T-piece fixed to the axle and either solid or braided pipes ran along the rear of the axle to the calipers...

    Hope I've described that okay...

braided hose might be easier to work with and would look neater, do you buy it ready made to the required length or crimp the ends on yourself?

You can do either, crimp the ends yourself or use a company like Hel who'll make them up to your requirements...

Did all mine in braided used olive compression fittings (no need for crimping) all bought from Rally Design bit more expensive but easier to do I think and can look a lot better/neater.

    same as.

One thing plan it out and use the swivel fittings so you can line fittings up at the ends as you can't twist it. Watch the delivery charges on Rally Design they charge you for a courier for 1 fitting. So tell them to send via post or you don't want it.

Go for The Hel type pipes with proper crimped ends and swivels if your budget stretches to it, the Diy type are shite and so are RD components.

I have seen some people fit solid pipes to sliding calipers which is a no no. Copy what the manufacturers do with std production cars, they can't be that wrong.

Mine were fine all fitted perfect with no leaks. Agree on the swivel fittings tho where possible.

Disagree and Disagree! The components are standardised and if you can't put them together correctly you shouldn't be touching brakes - full stop! Virtually every vehicle i've owned has had flexy brake lines made by me - they are easy, custom and work fine - no failures.

Two comments on the diagram - you could potentially lose the flexies to the h/brake cylinder saving several leak / airlock points with junctions and joints - nothing is likely to move therefore hardlines are ok and 2nd - mount the rear axle line on the axle with a single flex line to the car. There is no need for flex lines to the drums or calipers as the movement is very limited although it does make caliper servicing easier!

That was how I tried to describe it, maybe not very well though.

Down to a T piece on the axle, I personally would still use flexi's from the T piece to the calipers though.

    Brake pipes and hydraulic handbrake

Thanks guys, i had read that the cosworth rear calipers needed flexi due to the movement in the sliders, i probably should have mentioned that.

I think ill fit as above with a flexi to the axle, most cars ive seen are set up this way

Use Cupronickel for the solid pipes. Copper is soft and looks terrible. Use an Escort flexi for the axle and Cosworth flexis for the rear Calipers if you’re using Cossie rears

Defo do not solid pipe rear calipers, the movement will work harden the solid pipe then fracture, seen this so many times, you can only hard pipe to drum cylinders as they don’t move

    Brake pipes and hydraulic handbrake

I actually think it was one of your posts where i had read about using flexi on sliding calipers,
Totally agree that the cupro nickel stuff is much nicer, used it on my old defender
