Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

Does anyone know which OEM bearing is used on the heavy duty rally / group 4 release bearing carrier please?
I am thinking it is a Saab part but I cant remember. I don't really want to buy another full assembly, just want to replace the bearing.

Is it a round or flat-faced bearing?

I have a round faced release bearing HD3259 (Burton number) somewhere, it's new.

The Burton catalogue list the measurements, I can compare these to the one I have. Thanks

Re: Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

Not really, I ordered a SKF Clutch Releaser Bearing VKC 3505 but it is slightly shallower that the one I have.
For most applications might be OK but I need the same size.

I took original & VKC 3505 to various motor factors but as usual these days they just wanted the make & model of car.

I know it might be an added ball ache, but can you not just add a shim behind the bearing on the carrier to make up the difference.

Yes, agree. Probably end up doing that bit I am also going to measure the bearings too.

Its really more an exercise to find the right number so we will all know for again.

The joy of Turbosport over the facebook groups is stuff like this that can be easily searched for years later, if the right part number is found it can be used by lots of people.
I am guilty of just ordering a full grp 4 bearing assy in the past out of laziness, I change the bearing about every 2 seasons.

Might take me a couple of weeks to find them but I've got 2 steel bearing carriers lurking about in various places. I'll try and find them an see what I can come up with..

Had a brain wave with your bit of info, just used the numbers typed into fleabay, an with that are any of these any good? Could be worth a few messages an ask for some measurements.

Pretty sure they're all the same part number it's the 3264 that seems to be relevant. Maybe Graham's got one in amoungst his Rover bits?

Re: Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

I have a similar problem - just got the engine back in, went for a test drive and the clutch bearing is squealing

Looked up the numbers and found this thread!

    I ordered a HD3624 from eBay and also a HD3259 from Burtons

As can be seen from the pics (hopefully), the HD3264 has an angled face and the HD3259 has a round face, although not as rounded as the original one

So I chose to use the HD3259 but found it slid onto the steel carrier too easily
Looking at the specs, HD3259 is a 6W/1.5057 bearing, used on a lot of Fords and other English cars from the 70's

    1.5057" = 38.25mm
So making an assumption that the D1502 on the original means 1.502" = 38.15mm, this explains the difference in fit on the steel carrier

Also, there is a step on the carrier, so when the HD3259 is slid on, it is 19mm from the base so I decided not to add a spacer
To make it a tight fit, I pressed a large socket into the tube and applied 5 tons of pressure, then pressed the bearing on

It's all back together now and feels fine with the clutch cable adjusted to the same length as with the old bearing

I've kept the HD3264 bearing and pressed it into a spare steel carrier that I found and will keep it as a spare

Re: Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

I gave in & ordered a new complete heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing from Motorsport tools.

The new one came with the 'correct' depth bearing just like the old one. There are no numbers or markings on it that I can see without taking it off (it is pressed on of course)

Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

I am in the process of building up my clutch assembly and need to replace the bearing. I have an original ford steel carrier with a round type bearing. I am wondering what makes that a heavy duty bearing compared to a flat face type? Can anyone tell me what the difference is?

    Cheers Mike

Re: Replacement for heavy duty steel carrier clutch release bearing

Is your question when to use a flat-faced release bearing and when to use a round-faced one?
Flat faced for rounded "curly" fingers (of the pressure plate), round faced for flat fingers or for a clutch with a thrust pad.

Thanks for the response. I managed to deduce that with the help of Google. I have managed to obtain a genuine ford pressure plate which has curly fingers but I have a release bearing with a round face. Can anyone tell me if there is a flat faced version of this bearing. It's vkc3511 details as shown.
I would like to use this release bearing as it's a Ford heavy duty steel type. I am never fond of the plastic variety.

    Cheers Mike

Not sure but that looks flat-faced to me, sort of anyway, but maybe it's round.
I would think that's one thing the part number would denote, meaning a different part number.

The pictures only show the back of it which is flat.

Are there no part numbers on the old bearings ?

It would be odd for them not to have part numbers.
