    Advice needed??

Hi guys, its gr8 that this forum has a 4age section.
I have a question for some of the guys who have completed this installation in their mk1 or mk2. With the 4age being lighter than the pinto and kent, would it be okay to mount it forward enough to clear the rack without having to cut the sump? How will this effect the cars handling...weight distribution...etc.

The car will be used for drags and some street driving and some occasional track abuse.

I'm currently in the process of installing a 20V 4age in my mk1 and havent cut the sump yet:

I havent updated with the latest pictures but my last post in my project thread sums up the problems by not cutting the sump, there is virtually no rad space at all, so you can either move the rad forward or move the engine back or both

If you can push the engine back by a couple of inches, with a inch or so taken out the sump bowl, you would gain those precious inches at the front plus that slightly better weight distribution i presume but i'm no expert.

If you mounted it further forward you may need to think about the gearstick positioning as that will be pulled forward as well.

for street and drag racing use i cant see any ill effects of moving the motor forward a bit, round a circuit it might not be quite as precise or sharp in the steering dept, buy tbh i doubt youd notice

Nice work Dean on the install . Not looked at the thread for a while so it was nice to see the blacktop sitting nicely in the bay without sump modifications. As a cheaper option to a alloy radiator, Im using the bmw radiator from a E30 318i. This will be installed in the front panel to save space and has a built in expansion tank. The setup is very close to how retro ed has done his.

I was speaking to Martin at Raw and he suggested I didnt need a big expensive rad to help cooling due to how efficient the engine is. I suppose its the same in a kit car where theres a lack of space. A alternative maybe a polo rad some use on the zetec conversions

This way should help you gain that all important space without cutting the sump at all and save a bit of cash

    Re: Advice needed??

Hi guys. From what i gathered so far, there is not much disadvantage in mounting the motor with the sump as it is.With the exception of rad space.I am using a toyota fwd rad, fitted to our SA 4age/4afe. The rad thickness is not more the 50mm at the tanks, tanks are located in the top and bottom position. I did a mockup a few weeks back, with the intercooler rad and engine in place, space is tight, but exceptable, however i need to see if there is enough space for the cooling fans.

Are you going to be running air con?

I have an electric fan for the rad and an air con rad and another electric fan for that... Space is quite tight and it wouldnt all fit unless the sump was modded... Just a thought.

If you are going to put the intercooler inside the engine bay then there will not be enough room.

The intercooler i am using fits perfectly in the space between the rad and grille. I will post pics soon.

    Re: Advice needed??

Hi guys, since my first post here i have not really made much progress,i have however been able to get the engine in,trying to mock it up for the engine mountings and sump modification. Prior to me installing the 4age,my plans were to install a pinto turbo. I purchased a wxcm and some other bits. Do you guys know if it is possible to get wxcm mountings for a 4age as i do want to cut up the ones for the pinto just yet??? Thanks in advance for any info supplied.

    Re: Advice needed??

As yet, I dont think there are any 4AGE to WCXM mounts available. If there were, i think alot more of us installing 4AGE's would be using them rather than chassis mount kits since it would make the conversion almost a bolt in job.

Unfortunately I think you will have to modify the pinto mounts to suit.
