    Newman ph2 and valve clearances

I've installed, set and run in my ph2 cam on my pinto. fitted new rocker arms at the same time and have set the valve clearances to Newman's specs. 0.006 and 0.008. I've now got a pretty lumpy idle and I'm thinking these valve clearances may be too tight. is it worth me running the motor for a week or two and then rechecking, or should I open them up before I put the car into service?

if you have set them correctly it wont be tight clearances.

its going to be a carb or timing issue, and by timing it could be ignition or cam timing

cam timing was dialed in with the dti. ignition timing is currently at 11.5° but I have the same results with the dizzy moved either way. need to get another look with fresh eyes I think

hmm, have you played with the idle mixture to try and smooth it out? 32/36 isnt the best with a cam unless its a very mild cam or fr30/134

I started with the idle screw 2 turns out as a base setting and have gone from there but cant get it to smooth out. went for the phase2 as its listed as being best used with a single twin choke carb.

look down the carb with the engine running, can you see fuel dribbling out the aux vent? if so its needing the idle speed screw wound in a long way just to maintain an idle, this could be due to a air leak, blockage in the carb idle circuit, an idle jet way too small, cam timing way out, or maybe even that the cam is too hot to give a good idle on a twinchoke, certainly most cars with 285 degrees duration wont idle well on a 32/36

hopefully I can grab some time on it this week to check it over more. I'm considering doing bike carbs but really not sure at the moment
