If your budget extends to £20k to include a BD, then you could build the others brand new & cheaper!

Looking for a duratec/zetec engine or a BD.

There is a big difference in cost between Duartec/zetec and bda by about £13500 😅

I know lol, anything is of interest though... obviously a BD engine is a different ballpark but Im not excluding anything!
was hoping maybe to find a used BD engine slightly cheaper than the prices quoted above...

I don't think you have a chance of picking a BDA up cheap as they are becoming very rare. It might be in your best interest to have a new one built but for that you'll b looking towards 25k. On the other hand a Duratec would probably come a nearly half that. As they say there's no free lunch!

Re: Looking for a duratec/zetec engine or a BD.

We bought a 1700 BDA engine in 1982 for the sum of £600 which was alot of money back in the day. The engine was fitted into a Road Rally Car and on it's second event the engine broke it's crank in 3 places and threw part of it through the bottom of the sump.

The engine sat under the bench the best part of 35 years before a family member decided to have it fully rebuilt with new billet crank, rods and new dry sump system. The engine cost the best part of 10k to have built. Before the engine was collected from the builder another customer of his offered £12.000 for the engine which was declined.

The engine currently awaits going into a Clubman Historic specification Mk1 Escort when the rest of the car's finally finished.

To me unless you absolutely have to have a BDA for historic purposes they are financially unjustified a 180bhp pinto can be built for a tiny fraction of the cost of a bda, an st170 with standard internals can make 200bhp and costs scrapyard money to buy, in fact these days you can pick one up cheaper than a pinto in need of a rebuild, point in question being a bare pinto injection head will set you back £200, I’ve got an st170 (in bits but perfectly good). Under my bench at work which I’d sell for £200!

Well why BD engines are a wonderful thing you do have to ask yourself can you afford to repair one if it let’s go ! Lots of them are old and been in bits numerous times and bits of matching not always good, spend 25k on one and you stand a chance , recently there is a lot more about as there’s kits sold with most of the bits being reproduced and getting built by several engine builders. I would go modern and leave the BD engines alone.

Im open to suggestions, however isnt the Pinto quite heavy compared to a Zetec or a duratec?
What about a sigma engine? only 82 kiloes I think?

yes a pinto is heavy, although you could buy it an alloy block and it would still be cheaper than a bda! either way dont get too hung up on the weight of one, there stil plenty of pinto powered cars doing of a lot of winning on race tracks.

its certainly not the best option, i was merely pointing out that its actually a cheap option compared to a bd

Nice - bit spendy seeing how much you'll be throwing away and how much yet to be spent to get it RWD. From the spec its gonna be a bitch to drive on the street!

ended up paying 2200 for it, including the intake manifold ( but not the jenveys) and alternator.
Ill be putting on the retro jenveys, should be a good engine for the price.

Re: Looking for a duratec/zetec engine or a BD.

If I were you axle I would remove the head and measure the compression as there appears to be a massive intruder on the pistons. Piston manufacters often put a large intruder that then has to be machined down to obtain the desired comp ratio.

According to Newman Cams the PH5 is a Race cam, however it does n't have massive overlap so you could give them a try and see how they work with the throttle bodies regarding drivability at low speeds.

compression should be 12-13;1 according to the seller...

Never believe what you are told especially by someone selling, they often tell you what they want you to hear.

    There's a big difference between 12.0-1 and 13.0-1. compression.
