    Dubai Escort MK2 Duratec

Well as Svetlana is pretty well finished, it is time to dust off Gareth's MK2, which has been sitting patiently waiting to be attended to. This will be a joint effort between time-served-apprentice Dobuy and no-time-available Gareth. See if you can work out who is doing the clever bits!

First off this is the MK2, a fine LHD Philippino sourced shell, with minimal rust and rot, but a fair bit of filler for some reason. They seem to like their filler over in the Philippines!

Gareth's parts store of useless junk, but with a bigger transmission tunnel already welded in

Some work already started on the link boxes, spec will be race circuit

Dobuy's nephew Iain, enlisted as even cheaper labour, generally works for a free lunch and a T-shirt

Prop shaft and exhaust tunnel tacked in, right hand exhaust might give you a clue as to planned engine

    All welded up

Finally seat rails tacked in, using 2" box angle section, giving almost perfect width and alignment

Lots more to come, so stay tuned, this one won't take 2.5 years

    Re: Dubai Escort MK2 Duratec

    Little update
Got stuck into sorting out the tubs and tarmac arches, thought I would try the Oxy-acetelyne torch to chop out the sill corners, but in the end went back to the trusted 1mm cut-off discs

Tidied up the arch to the correct size for the Rally Design Tarmac arches, these will be riveted on as we move towards paint

    Arches trial fitted

    Inner tub formed

Should be big enough for up to 17 inch wheels if need be, although Gareth plans to run 15's

Gareth welding up the sides and turrets. We decided to make the turrets, which turned out to be a bit of a mare, with hindsight we probably should have just bought them and saved a load of fabrication and head scratching time.

The chassis rail is knotched back, so again plenty of clearance

Pretty well finished tub and turret

Little fillets to firewall the sides and add strength

Going to blast the car soon, as there is a fair bit of filler inside and outside that needs removed. Also waiting for the roll cage to come from blighty.

    Re: Dubai Escort MK2 Duratec

OK, wee bit of an update from sunny Dubai's only Ford Escort service center

Got my spare block in to make the engine mounts

Type 9 used to mock up for Quaiffe Sequential that is in the post

LH engine mount being fitted to Chassis rail, wish I had done this on my car

    RH mount finished

LH mount finished, was a bit of a pain, as I had tacked it all together, but it moved during weld up, so had to cut the engine plate off and do it again.

Meanwhile Gareth, was busy with his Atlas Axle narrowing

Fully floating hubs, just in case he decides to go off-piste

Diamond brackets welded up, he does quite nice work our Gareth, when you can get him out of the office!

Some JCB spares arriving from the UK

    revealing

Something a bit more like a couple of new Duratec's from Powertec Engineering http://www.sports2000-srcc.com/proseries/engine.cfm

Good price at Ģ1800 each shipped to Dubai, unlike the local dealer that quoted me Ģ8600 for the same thing, but they did offer 20% discount, hard to see how I could turn that one down.

Manifold from eBay, not bad for Ģ160, bit tight on the inner wing, so chopped 3 cm's out of it and re-welded at the manifold, should be fine for the 200 rear wheel horsepower we are aiming for.

hmm, perhaps not the nicest in the world, but it was seriously cheap off eBaySo off the shell went to the blasters to remove all the filler..

Had a few repairs before, but shell is pretty solid

Not quite sure just why they welded up this part

Looks like it has had a bit of a light smack on the rear end, but repair is fine

Roof and gutter need a bit of a re-repair

    Likewise door pilar

Suspension verticals need a bit of a patch

Mostly solid, with a few little repairs required

Brazing torch has been used to strengthen shell

Floor a bit beaten about, but solid

So onward with the repairs, first a couple of patches for the front suspension verticals

Bade from 2.5mm steel so should be plenty strong

Chopped out the old top mount to repair and give a bit more clearance for the exhaust, so now there is just room for the roller bearing top mount.

Also repaired the bubble bottom rot

    Repaired the roof and gutter

Still needs a little fettle-ing, but will sort that out before paint.

    Radiator lowering panel fabricated

Got stuck into the cage, was supplied as a kit from the UK, so saved a lot of time not having to bend the main hoop and door pilar bars

So that's it for the moment, need to get Gareth to get the rear axle mounted up ont he links, so we can finish off the rest of the rear end, then get in the rest of the cage.

    Re: Dubai Escort MK2 Duratec

OK, so some more pictures, Gareth decided that it was time to get serious, so has been cracking on with the metal work

Started in on the firewall and decided that the transmission tunnel was too wide for the seat, so out that came

    Firewall in place

And a little front wheel well modification

Should now give decent full lock clearance

And a new tunnel was made and promptly put in the scrap pile so we are on version 3 at the moment

    Tunnel version 3

    Tunnel Done.

    Dash support bar done.

    Front triangulation finished

    and the rear cage cross

Version 2 of the Seat bars in, first ones, along with the tunnel did not allow for full width of seat

A little progress, seat belt bars fitted to cage,

Tank bolted in ready to sort out filler

Sorry my Bad, it should be PowerTorque
The engines are brand new, unmolested Focus engines, with standard 11.9:1 pistons.
They are about the same price (1800 quid) shipped to Dubai, as you would pay in the UK shipped to your home, including VAT.

Oi.. when did i ship some of my 4 link front brackets out to you
Yes , I think it is fair to say that Gareth is suitably impressed by your Tarmac link boxes and copied them a leetle, copyright cheque is on the way by international carrier pigeon....

Ive been storing the information on those link boxes for a long time, you may remember me picking your brains, that was back when i first thought about starting this project the problem i had is i couldn't get them folded as narrow as the dimensions you gave me. but i think they turned out OK.

Ahh yes i do remember now.. Yes they are a pain to get folded, the people I get to do my lazer cutting had to outsource the folding even though they have folders there.
