    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

Just found the thread - I owned this car in late 1998 to mid 2000. I regretted selling it as soon as I did! It was very very solid when I had it, no sign of rust anywhere.

Bought it with a blown diff, got it on the road and ran course opening car for the East Anglian Classic rally in it (in 2000 I think). It had a 2.0 Pinto with some mods.

    Hi Richmcl,

Yes, unfortunately it looks like the car was very well used after you sold it. The company that did a lot of the conversion work didn't do the car any favours because their work was complete crap.

Thanks for getting in touch though

Update on the brake and clutch mounting plate, I've created a template for dilling the holes for nice even spacing. We have also added a small tab into the rear of the plate, the fit is now so much nicer.

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

I've ended up selling the Gartrac pedal box I had for a floor mounted Tilton setup, with the Tilton pedals I can have my seat as far back as it will go.

Probably should have tried to fit this before welding in the front roll cage foot but the cardboard template my dad make worked a treat

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

This is by far the biggest achievement on the car so far, both new tunnels are fitted and welded in.

You can't believe the time spent on getting these to fit nicely, with a really clean return fold underneath the car.

Its really starting to look like a car again

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

Was quite surprised to see how bad it had got (never mind the bad workmanship), especially as it hasn't seen much action on the road since I sold it - it must have been stored outside for some time.... Have you got the odometer - how many miles on it?

Unfortunately a lot of the parts were lost including the clocks when the car was moved to a new storage unit around 2010

More cardboard templates reinforced with tig welding rods, I'm surprised that I couldn't find anyone making these but a local company folded it up for.

They need a few dimple die holes and the battery tray mounts between the diff tunnel and 4 link box needs doing before these are welded in

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

Seat bars going in anyone that has fitted these will know they are horrible to install, they are so time-consuming. Both sides have ended up even because of the cage the passage seat can't go back any tougher

And as of 2 weeks ago no longer FIA/MSA Approved but that's life, there definitely not coming out now

Really??? What have they changed now, how do they want them fitted then?
    Larger reinforcing plates maybe?

Check out page 164 in the new 2020 Blue book, pain in the ass loads of people are having to cut the seat bars out. I have no plans to race the car so Im not changing them now they are in.

The main part they have changed is losing the overhanging seat brackets for a bolt through the centre of the tube

    https://www.motorsportuk.org/wp-cont...ook-2020-1.pdf

2.2.1. Supports must be attached to the shell/chassis via at
least 4 mounting points per seat using bolts with a minimum
diameter of 8mm and counterplates, according to drawing No.
K32 or K64. In the case of drawing No. K64 the end plates may
alternatively be welded to the counterplate. The minimum area
of contact between support, shell/chassis and counterplate is
40 sq cm for each mounting point. In Series Production Cars
manufacturers’ standard seat mounting points may be used. If
quick release systems are used, they must be capable of
withstanding vertical and horizontal forces of 18000N, applied
non-simultaneously. If rails for adjusting the seat are used, they
must be those originally supplied with the homologated car or
    with the seat

The photos of the new kit Motorsport Tools have made shows the changes well, it makes sense a lot of people welding its up to scratch for something like this. They must have seen the old design ripping off the tube

Okay yeah I see what you mean. Drawing 64 is how I did mine years ago, but I welded some small angle with captive nuts to the sides of my square tubes to bolt the seat mounting kit to before bolting the seats to that.

I can see why they have done it, I know its upset a lot of people that have had their cars painted and so on

It really is but hopefully what we're doing to the car will make it back into a nice car again

Navigators footrest mounts have been made up this week on the lathe along with a template to help weld them in.

This car is turning into a porker, the time has come to put dimple holes in the panels where it doesn't look out of place

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

I have been very lucky and won an online competition for an ECUMaster ADU 5 LCD display, I still can't believe I won it!

The software is really good, you can create any design/layout you want, I've had a quick go and created two pages. One for the road and a second page with more info for the track.

This will look great in the car, I think its going to be mounted to the steering column just because the 5" screen isn't that big and I've packed a lot of info into the screen

Crazy how much they cost nowadays. I had an RS pod in my other Escort at the time as well, they just weren't that hard to get hold of.

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

Loads more progress made on the car, a huge amount of work and welding to get the car back to where it was when we started work on the car.

Needed a change of scenery so started looking at the rear axle, only got the toe correction & caliper brackets tacked on so far but it's nice to be working on something other than the shell

unless its a way to try and alter toe i cant see the point, rose joints being movable wont brace against bending of the axle

Its a toe correction kit with left & right-handed threaded rose joints, it allows you to put the axle under tension to set toe and minimise the tube flex under hard acceleration.

They work very well but you have got to be careful not to over adjust and bend the axle tubes

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

With a toe correction kit, it will stop axle spread under high grip conditions 2mm deflection per side max giving 4mm toe-in, this mk2 will be on 9-inch slicks for the rear, a Duratec 250-260bhp engine is already built to get it on the road then the 350bhp upgrade to follow.

    Re: SFS 447V Harrier Project

Didn't really achieve anything this weekend apart from learning a lot about Atlas axle widths and how that relates to wheel widths and offsets. I was really hoping to get away with a 52" axle and still get a nice dish on the rear wheels by playing around with the offsets but that's not going to happen with the 52" casing.

I have only brought the front wheels so far which are a 15x8J with 0ET, because they are a 0 ET they are good starting point to work out what I can get away with tarmac arches and the 52" casing. You can see in the photo the 0 ET wheel is almost touching the arch, using an online offset calculator I would need a positive offset to be able to fit the 9J wheel which isn't any good. Looks like the tools we make to push the tubes out are going to be used again to convert this casing into a 50" version to gain more arch clearance.

It's nice to be getting to the more interesting parts of the build
