    Prop shaft question

I'm trying to slide the splined nose of my prop into the back of my Cossie 2WD T5 gearbox. It only wants to slide in about 1 inch. Then it stops dead. Is it supposed to slide in further? 1 inch does not seem much!

Also, are the bolts used for the fitment of the other end of the prop (on the diff flange) anything special? Should I just use 12.9 grade bolts, or regular 8.8 grade?

Any help would be much appriciated.

I thought 1 inch wasnt right. The spline on my Escort probably slides in 4 inches into the type9 box.

I can't think why it wont go in further. Surely I shouldn't have to tap it with a hammer?

I would say no as it needs to be able to slide freely.

Its from Recoprop. I told them it was going from a T5 box to a Volvo diff, and gave them exact measurments, and they made it to spec. The project stalled, so only just got round to fitting it.

There are two things you need to check Beers, is the mainshaft of the geargox twisted towards the end of the splines or are the splines damaged in your new propshaft. It's probably more likely the prop. An inch is no use to anyone. Are the splines actually mating together or could they be a different size.

    Re: Prop shaft question

    I finally got this sussed!

I never would have thought that when I sprayed the propshaft the paint film thickness on the nose could cause an issue. It must be a tiny fraction of a millimetre. I noticed how the paint was scraping off on the 1" that I managed to push in, so I thought I'd see what happens if I scraped all the paint off the nose. That's all it took. It slips in fine now. Lesson learned - mask off the nose before painting a prop.

Thanks everyone for your ideas on this one.

    Re: Prop shaft question

Oh dear why did paint the sliding yoke, as you probably know it goes both into a seal and then into a bush. Oil would have eventually made its way past the seal if the prop would have fitted into the gearbox .
I am glad you have got the problem solved without it costing you a penny.
