What’s the best way of removing a 5 speed type 9 from Mk2 Escort with a Blacktop Zetec fitted?
Will it come out without removing the engine?
The car was a manual before the conversion, not the big auto tunnel.

I'm guessing here, but It might if you drop the crossmember down on some long studs. Other than that it'll be engine out aswell, unless it has a quick release bellhousing in which case the bellhousing is staying in the car and you can just unbolt the gearbox from the back of the bellhousing.
Replace the cross member bolts with longer ones 1 by 1 and drop the engine as low as possible this will give you the most clearance without having to crane lift the engine and fiddle around at an angle

If you drop the x-member don't forget to disconnect the steering column. I normally have to work on my own with such jobs and find it is easier just to drop everything on the floor engine and all onto dolley on castors. Rather than lifting things up and out.
Wrestling a gearbox on your own on your back is no fun.

Yes, I’ve heard about lowering the xmember on Pinto and Xflow engined cars, but wasn’t sure it would work with a Zetec.
Effectively same bolt pattern used so exactly same methods work. Must drop X member to access bolts at top of bellhousing but be carefull as the retaining nuts within the chassis legs are only tacked in place - too much rocking around and they shear - not a good day!
If lowering the crossmember, I also remove the steering wheel.
Thanks for all the replies.
