Strengthening Part 3 : Strut Tops
Put some POR15 around the strut tops where the new Avo Style plates will sit
Drilled Holes so I can plug them up, Hopefully that’ll help.....
Added some more little Gussets in here
Painted it over with some POR15 again, Job Done
Looking very good mate
Was your other Mk1 in Classic Car magazine a few years back?
Top Stuff
The Diff
Got My Hilux Diff Today, been all machined/shortened to fit.
4:3 LSD
The diffs sitting upside down at the moment
But just showing the setup
All the Brackets welded on
Running Sierra Rotors
Nissan Primera Calipers so I can run a Hydraulic Handrake
checking the 13's do fit
Temporary Fitment so I can get onto the turrets next
Just to show the size difference
Escort Sport Halfshaft vs. Hilux Shaft
Excellent I thought I'd seen your car somewhere before. I'm sure your new project will be in the magazine as well, it's looking great mate
Mine was pretty good but unfortunately the earthquakes and liquefaction have taken their toll on it and it's in need of some tlc now. We need to find a new house, so it's just parked up in the garage until we can get sorted. Since buying it I've put a 1600 sport engine and gearbox in it, replaced the shocks for Gaz ones and tidied up the interior a bit. Still heaps more to do though
I like the Hilux diff, what did you have to do to it to make it fit and what sort of Hilux was it out of?
get yourself an rn 20-25 series hilux diff, they bolt straight in, got one in the mk 1. all good
Fantastic project
What ratio is the hilux axle?
Great memory to remember the car
ahhh sorry to hear about the damage from the quakes, best of luck finding a new house and I look forward to seeing some fresh photos of your Mk1 after some TLC!
Did you find your one through Trademe too?
qcadta's onto it about the R20-25 series Diffs, just needed some modding for the hubs and the brackets for links/leafs/brakes etc CheeRS
Cheers mate, I'll have to post some pictures when it's back to it's former glory.
A friend told me about the car as he knew I was after one at the time, glad he did really. It was built in the UK for export and it's been in New Zealand since it was about 18 months old but where it was before that I'm not to sure. I think it must have been somewhere hot as the heater is locked in the cold position and has no temperature controls, only the heater direction lever/decals are on the dash.
Cheers for the advice about the diff, I might have a go at putting one in mine when I get sorted
Jees 74 and I thought my one had rust I look forward to seeing her at Hampton Downs when finished. As you have seen my 2 are a long way off but I am slowly gathering bits and pieces for them. yours is looking great
Strengthening Part 4 : Suspension Towers
Been busy with the Angle Grinder and cut these off a mates donor car as I plan to modify them to form a double skin inside the existing towers to reinforce them.
After a bit of panelbeating I got a neat fit
Sandblasting - I also managed to get those chassis strengtheners that Mk2's seem to come out with
Por15 'd the insides to prevent rusting
All seems to fit nicely still
That time again
Chassis Strengtheners
All done
painted some POR15 on
Turrets are next on the 'to do list'
Superb work going on there................the axle looks bullet-proof !
Sorry late with the reply.
Yes we can post to NZ.

Merry Christmas !
Been Busy before Christmas to get the turrets in before I go away
Removing the rear seat panel with the spot weld drill
Measured and checked this atleast a dozen times before I was confident enough (even got dad out to check)
No Going back now
The turrets have to sit slightly more forward than usual as the mounts on the hilux diff for the suspension are postioned infront of the diff not on top. Had to modify the boxes to get them to fit neatly
Happy with the string line and the measurements, time to get the welder out
All done, brought some por15 and metal ready so I can get some paint on the floors
The results
Made some mock up bilsteins to check out the setup
Happy with that, I Bolted the diff in properly and chucked the wheels on
All Packed up
See you in the New Year with some more developement on the project I hope
Nice work mate, have a good break
Cracking on with it now
Nice to go away with with things rounded up a bit with some nice paint on
Have a great christmas
cracking work mate... good lad..

And other junk I don't like to talk about!
Been a slow start to the year
Not too much progress to report on as Ive just been doing minor rust repairs, saving money and collecting a few more parts
Made myself some chassis tubes, fitted them a few weeks ago
Fabricated a weld on Strut Brace in some spare time at work
Picked up a Toyota Celica 5 speed thats been modified to suit my Pinto
Got the Grandparents to bring me over some Alloy Hubs from the UK as they were nice and light, saved me a few hundred. Cheers peterlloydrallying
Been weighing up the options and talked to a few people about the rear end and my plans have changed. Im ditching the 2Link for a 4Link setup and Im hoping to run some Adjustable rear coilovers now. I've got a mate flying back here from the UK and Ive convinced him to bring me back a 4 Link Kit
This is the one I brought from Burtons, Saved me a shit load Cheers Deon
I've tryed fitting my new front panel, which fits great. Only problem is the fibre glass bubble arches arent lining up with the rest of the car
Do I tack the front panel on and then try fit the guards?
Im not sure how to tackle this task and how much I can fiddle with the fibreglass before cracking/damaging it
I may have to get a panelbeater to give me a hand with this one
Hopefully in the next post I'll have some progress on the 4 Linking
Hey, sorry I managed to miss your reply!
We had a bit more damage from the quake on the 23rd, but we've got a new house now and a nice big garage, so that's all good.
Cracking progress on yours mate, family or friends coming from the UK is always great for getting bits here cheap isn't it
what a spend up! great work. Your guards should sit over the front panel rather than behind as youve shown. try that and see how ya get on mate.
Where did you buy the wings, sorry guards, from?
How close are they to the scuttle panel (the bit under the windscreen) ?

Got them from Trademe which is the kiwi version of ebay so Im unsure where they were originally made
Heres the gap between the scuttle panel and the wing/guard
Its really close at one point then tapers off
theres a 1mm gap at its closest point and 10mm gap at the other end and the gap between the door and the guard is 14mm all the way down
They need fettling around the top, near the windscreen and pushing back to close up the gap.
Maybe they are just a little bit too small... Can you get the front panel to go back any further, it looks like it only needs a few mm and the gap would be perfect.
new a man of your talent would get it sorted. as m11rf says, hows the front panel sittin? can you tweak it a little to suit? lookin real nice though mate.
or you can build up the edge with some fiber glass to get the door shut right, i did the same kinda thing using welding rods on my metal wings on my capri.
MK3 Capri 2LT ZETEC
Hey man what primera calipers are they? p10? Oh and where did you get those calipers from?
