    Re: Project Alan Mann

Been a while since Ive posted so I've got quite a few updates.

Firstly I've been on the hunt for a decent compressor for spraying the car and in the future running air tools on.
I got outbidded on a number of auctions on Trademe but finally got one

    Airmaster 15 Compressor, 130PSI, 2.2kw motor, 60Litre Tank and 15CFM

We put it to the test the weekend after purchasing it

My mate managed to get hold of some infrared heat lamps which have worked a trick

    The new Powerplant!

    I found this last weekend

Couldn't resist the specs on this engine with such a reasonable pricetag, so I

    Heres the spec sheet

    2L Pinto SOHC
205 o-ringed and de-burred Bruce Manon designed Block
    Shot peened crank
    5.7 long Chev (Crower) rods
Forged short skirt pop top CP pistons
    Genuine RL22 Kent cam
Leading Edge big valve 1600 head with Matched inlet manifold and Twin side draft 45 Weber's
    Vernier pulley
    Electric water pump
    Bosch/lumenition distributor (re-curved)
    Ali flywheel
2" Big bore extractors with anti reversion stubs

    O-ringed block

Full spare set of rings and pistons

Managed to get this free with the engine too

    Trial Fitment

There's a lot of mod's I need to do, the manifold needs reworking to fit and the sump needs a chop but overall happy with my purchase. Time to get modifying

    Retail Therapy

About 10 weeks ago I found out that my company were sending a pallet of parts from the Uk to here. After sweet talking the boss he let me sneak a few bits onto the pallet. Big thanks to my workmate Deon who packed and wrapped the parts on the pallet for me

Took about 8-9weeks to arrive but its finally here (not all that stuff on the pallets mine only a couple of boxes)

This held up the delivery a bit, customs had a good nosey through all the parts

A box full of seals/rubbers and some urethane bushes

Electronic ignition set up for the Pinto

    Quickrack

    Twin Cowel Dash from Yukspeed

Just a trial fit, sooo glad I went for this! Not many escorts have these in them over here

    Adjustable pedal Box

    Polycarb windows

I got both driver/passenger windows and the rear quarters, unfortunately I couldn't fit the rear screen on the pallet

Also got a few other bits, a few more springs for the coilovers and some other spares for the suspension/steering

Didn't want to neglect the four door either so that got some new rear shocks

These adjustable gaz dampers made a hell of a difference, definitely notice the differences between the adjustment settings. Wish I had of brought these sooner!

The front wings have been a bit of a mission,
after hours and hours of fibre glassing and re-fibre glassing and sanding I've got them almost right

Finally they sit flush with the doors and the gaps all round are equal

    Back to the Engine

No way I can get this manifold to fit as it is (far too wide), I'll have to give it a chop
(just need to save up and buy some gas for the welder)

    Been cleaning up the engine

Given it a coat of paint

Oiled it all up and wrapped it and stored away until the rest of the cars ready for it

Burrowed the engine hoist so I could experiment with some different engine mounts to get the motor sitting low enough

After a few different mounting setups its finally sitting nicely, the sump got a heavy chop though

Heres how its sitting at the moment, Im happy with the position but not with the engine mounts.

Next Job ---> Build a chassis mount kit

Great project! Nice that you are going for a na engine!

If there is to many red and gold color mk1's in NZ you can always go for a red and silver combo. Thats a nice choice....

Got to agree it's coming along very well and the colour choice of Zip's car is a great alternative to the red/gold

    Chassis Mount Kit

More bits from the UK arrived, anti dive kit and some more poly bushes
but more importantly my bushes for the chassis mount kit
Measured them up and drew up some plans to build my own

Machining the housing for the bushes, I just used front leaf spring bushes.
Pretty sure these are the same bushes they use on world cup crossmembers

Well after quite a few late nights at work, a few and some I finished making them

I made some pretend bushes up out of nylon so I can weld them in place on
the car and not destroy my nice new ones

I scalloped some thick walled tube on the mill and made some plates up to bolt on the motor

Since I won't be needing the mounts off the crossmember any more they got the chop
I ran a few seam welds on the inside and made up a gusset to cover it in

Yeah I know, a few more holes, gotta carry on the trend

Gave the back of the crossmeber a chop aswel to give the sump a bit more clearance

    Back to the chassis mount.....

    Bit of prep

Tissue paper inner came in handy for mocking the pipe up

    All tacked up

Having a few issues with the welder so tacking it in place will have to do for now until I get that fixed

    Re: Project Alan Mann

    Last update of the year

Got the welder back up and running and finished these off

Welded up the rest of the chassis mounts

Had to do some huge mods to this anti dive kit I bought to make it fit.
Finally its ready to try out, ofcourse a few more swaged holes

All the new bits getting a lick of paint

    Chassis mount kit complete

Radiator support has been given a trim to fit the big alloy rad

    AND, the best bit
After quite a few years of sitting on rotisseries and trolleys
the escorts on the ground for the first time

    Low enough?

    That's it for this year
    Merry Christmas

Looks cool sitting on the ground, great stance.

Just a quick Q - what type of rivets did you use for the rear guards? stainless steel, aluminium, plain steel, counter sunk or standard? I've got some guards I need to do sometime soon.

Thanks "hexcort" ! I used normal stainless steel rivets on my guards, they will need a skim of filler to hide so some counter sunk ones might not be a bad idea.

Heres a close up of mine

    Bodywork

After putting the doors on I realised one door was the older locking style without the push rod arrangement on it and after all the hard work of swaging all the holes I didn't fancy doing another door

So I swapped the mechanism onto this door and grafted this on

    Factory..ish

    Stripping time

    Paint Stripper

Just about back to bare steel now

Patched a bit of rust and Filled those trim holes up

I painted the doors and got them hung, now time to make a start on the rear arches

    Fibre glassing

    Filler

Bit of primer, plenty more sanding to go but ran out weekend and daylight

Also added a few more holes

Back on the ground again, this time on its highest setting

Double sway bar setup I made at work

Machined up some new adapters to fit the rear disc brakes properly

first time to have a complete engine in the engine bay

Testing the fit of plastic windows

Will have to find some new seals to fit around the fronts

    Fitted the adjustable pedal box

    made up some firewall templates

The sump that came with my race motor had already been chopped to fit the crossmember
It had no baffles or anything on it so I've been working on improving that

    I made up some wings
had to make a new sump plug too

    My side baffle idea

My mates baffle I intend on replicating, anyone else use one similar?

Some shiny bits to finish of my post

Love the Carbon front lip. Not too sure about how much flow you'll get with the baffles. Instead, why not use gates instead? The baffle around the pickup looks comprehensive Whole project looks great!

cheeRS Allan , made up a baffle now, just needs to be welded in. No gates on there yet, will run it and see how it does and develop if need be.

Got the car in the garage for winter

My new headers arrived , fit is perfect...makes a change!

    Knocked this up

A few more shiny bits, got some 13 x 8's and some 9's sent to me to trial fit

    9's

    8's

I think I'll go for the 8's, shouldn't have any clearance issues with them and the tyres options wont be so limited either.
