Just been shown the internals of a 2.88:1 4HLA IRS diff which had a strange star gear arrangement and wanted to identify it. Sorry don't have a picture but this will surely ring a bell, instead of a normal cross pin arrangement, it seems to have two steel blocks that slide against each other, and the normal star wheel circular piece sits in a V in the central Crownwheel carrier casting rather than in a round hole like normal. There were 4 star gears in there but no sign of any clutch plates that I could see, it looks like the central part expands and locks the diff but I can't see how it allows independent wheel rotation when not locked.

The unit is off a Jag and if it is an LSD, it would seen to have been factory fitted as the carrier has 04HLA cast into it.

Thanks ... Tony
