    Hi Mark

I've had that with the rear crank seal before, you've got to be a little bit more generous with the sealer around the rear where the seal sits. What sealer are you using? I've had the best results with Loctite 5910 it's the black OE stuff, usually get it from halfords, it comes in a large toothpaste style tube.

Had a look last night mate, they are Toyo Proxes R888. Not sure they are any good or not, they came on the rims

    Thanks,
    Alan.
Alan, was a bit of a learning curve polishing the aluminium. The finish around the outside in this picture is the finish i had to get it to.......

Used rotary flap wheels in a die grinder to flatten the cut surface..

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_od...wheel&_sacat=0

Then used one of the cheapo felt polishing kits off ebay....

    Cost about £13
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_tr...at=0&_from=R40

Then to polish up the flat surfaces I used the polish from the other kit and a couple of these

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_od...115mm&_sacat=0

It was a long progress but definitely worth it, the closer to mirror finish you can get the metal the deeper the colour will be when they anodize it.
Couple of tips.........use as much of the polishing compound as you can, its easy to let the felts dry out and do it somewhere you don't care to much about. I ended up black from head to toe!

Thanks Matt, that was not the one I used but it looks similar stuff. If this fails I will give it a go. Thanks. It was that area you had a problem with by the sounds of it, where the sump meets the bottom of the seal housing? Its got more than should be enough sealer in there this time! I have built it back up and left it over night to cure so will fill it back up with oil tonight and have a look.

    Cheers mate

Thanks lads, could not be happier with the cam cover.

Been on tidying up a few bits of the build this week whilst waiting for the doors, boot and bonnet to come back from paint. Fostek are well on with the axle which only really leaves 2 big jobs, brakes and clutch.

Got the exhaust finished off. Had a read on a few forums and apparently this is about as good as it gets for painting exhausts.........

I got some tabs laser cut out of 3mm steel but must have sent them off to one of my customers in the bottom of a bag of their parts never to be seen again!
In the end as you have spotted these are M10 washers, stuck them over the vice and gave them a good crack with a chisel down the middle. Also ground a bit of a flat on them so I had a bit more weld area.

Small amount of progress this weekend. Added a changeover relay to the windscreen wiper circuit so the park function works, and fit the polycarbs to the rears

Put painting the rest of the panels on hold again as I have chance of a fiberglass boot lid later on in the week.

    Re: Mk2 Duratec Escort

First of all apologies for the lack of updates, life is hectic at the moment. Jumped ship at work and have set up on my own so that has taken up 95% of my time. The other 5% I have managed to crack on getting the car almost completed.

Massive thanks to Tom and John at Fostek for getting the axle built, it fits beautifully and is an absolute masterpiece........
Fully floating Atlas, Gripper diff, 4.6CWP, lightweight hubs, Ap handbrake calipers

All the brakes are now pipe up, wiring complete, though my master switch seems to have given up tonight I have got an Super2000 clutch sorted out.

    Jobs left to do..............
Finish modifying bell housing for quick release gearbox (will get some pictures up at the weekend)
    bur a release bearing
    fit clutch and box
    buy a prop
fit front screen once its had a quick blast around the yard and i an certain i can bolt the dash down
    doors and panels to refit
passenger seat to buy and fit
    dry cell battery

Yes the breather just vents the axle casing to atmosphere, stops it pressurising when it heats up/cools down. Pipe just stops water getting in...

I am doing the same conversion with a Raceline Duratec, i used world cup x member and retro ford mounts, all worked well. Got an oil filter adaptor from Dunnell who do one for dry sumps as well as wet. I have used a Mazda MX 5 gearbox which i have had varying comments about. Wiring the ECU is next on the list and then should be ready to go.

    Re: Mk2 Duratec Escort

Thanks again lads. Bit of an update...
Had very little time and even less motivation over the last couple of weeks but I have managed to get a few of the jobs struck off.

Quick release bosses fabricated and fitted into the bell housing.

Getting the spacing set for the clutch release bearing has been the most frustrating part of this build so far! Basically, with the combination of AP clutch and release bearing I am running there was no room for a spacer in the back of the bell housing. I was planning to rely on the spacer as an adapter to convert the mismatched hole positions on bell housing and release bearing.

I ended up modifying the bell housing with and adapter sleeve which would then locate the release bearing concentrically, and had to drill and tap the back of the bell housing to fasten the two components together.

Bit of a crap photo but its in!

This is the last major component of the build

Prop is in now, brakes are bled up, clutch is bled up.......................and it drives
The video we took was poor so will get one up asap. Got a few small mechanical bits to do yet, and need to re fit doors, boot and bonnet, but going to get the thing booked in for an MOT before the end of the month.

Was a big decision to make Lee trust me! After 11 years at the company and an ever increasing work load ......................... anyway! I am flat out on all sorts of design projects at the moment and in the process of dotting i's and crossing t's on building a brand new CNC workshop. Watch this space.

Will also be looking to becoming a Turbosport sponsor if anyone knows how to go about that???

    Re: Mk2 Duratec Escort

After pretty much an all nighter on Friday got the car about MOT ready, leaving just a couple of daft little jobs for Saturday morning, number plate lights to wire, wash jets to fit into bonnet, mirror to mount.

Got all the jobs finished in good time Saturday morning, 10 minutes before setting off for test thought I best give it a good blast up the road as its only ever moved a couple of hundred yard under its own steam. would it start....NO
Plenty of fuel, power to ecu, stook a spare plug into each lead and all sparking, could not find a plug socket and a normal deep one would not fit through the cam cover! So cam cover had to come off to get the plugs out, and they were in need of a good clean. I had been messing on with the fuel pressre reg the day before and it must have been running way over pressure. Re fittled the gauge and dialed it back into to 2.9bar, with the clean plugs it fired straight up.

Mad rush then to the test centre, only to be told he could not test it without a chassis number permanently somewhere on the shell So sped off in a courtesy car to the workshop and dremmeled it into a bit of tin, then back to the garage to rivet it on!

Anyway it passed!! Only comment he did make was there it a bit of wear in on the drumsticks so its getting a new HD rack when it gets its geometry set up on tomorrow.

Drives really well though, pulls like an train right through the range in every gear. Will look into getting it on the rollers soon but to say its only got a base map in it there are no noticeable flat spots, real credit to Steve at SBD.

I have a few things on the snagging list, Mainly fit a catch tank for the dry sump instead of an empty Volvic bottle, get another seat as I using a borrowed one in the passenger side and wire up the heated screen.
