Forest Arches corner protection for Escort Mk2

    Hi

My car is being repainted and the old rubber patch that was riveted to the leading bottom edge of the rear arches is too tired to go back on (there was some mastic behind the material too).

I'll use the existing rivet holes in the bodywork.

What's the best looking material for making some new patches out of? The polyvinyl stuff they advertise for mudflaps looks too stiff to conform to the weird shape.

I've got a sheet of butyl stuff left behind by a roofer which looks promising. It's a bit thinner than the old stuff but this might help it conform.

The car isn't going to see gravel tracks ever but I'm sure that even road use will chip the paint off those corners pretty quickly.

Any accounts of successful installation and tidy looking material gratefully received.

    Cheers
    J

PS I have seen moulded Kevlar protection but this isn't period/historic looking in any way!
    And it is very expensive...

There are carbon corner protectors that you can buy that are n't too expensive. I know they aren't from period but they have got to look better than the old rubber belting that we used. The advantage is that they can be bonded on without having to drill the body for rivets.

If they don't float boat you could always try someone that produces moulded mudflaps to see if they do moulded corners.
