    Crossflow flywheel issue

    Hi all,

I am half way through my auto to type 9 conversion on my mk2 1600 Ghia and have come up with an issue. The auto box, torque convertor etc has been removed and i just have the crank palm to fit my crossflow manual flywheel to. The only issue is, is the hole in the centre of the flywheel is 45mm and the spigot on the rear of the crank palm is 35mm, so there is a circumference of 10mm gap meaning the flywheel cannot centralize itself. The hole in the old torque convertor plate is correct for the crank but it is still smaller than my flywheel centre. Is there anyway around this?

    Thanks, Neil

you sure thats a x/flow flywheel, not a pinto one? x/f flywheel centers the OD of the crank via a recess on the its back not the middle

Yep,flywheel came off a mk1 Escort crossflow engine. I've not taken one off for years so wasnt sure if it was right or not.

Mind you,I have heard that the autos have a spacer on the rear of the cranks that need removing. Maybe this would help with centralising the rear side of the flywheel

That didn't answer the question about it being a proper one! Proper crossflow flywheel as Graham said has a spigot that fits on the outside of the rear crank surface on the same diameter that the rear seal seals on.

If you use a pinto flywheel on a crossflow it will fit, but it will shear the bolts in time - that will make a mess of the engine bay, bonnet and perhaps even personal injury.

If you have left the auto spacer on that needs to come off.

A photo of the other side of your flywheel and also the end of the crankshaft would help us help you.

All sorted! Turns out I hadn't removed the auto spacer disc on the rear of the crankshaft. What an idiot! Flywheel fits nice and snug on the rear now. Thanks for the replies guys
