    Newbie.....

    Hi all,

I have been reading up on some of the threads regarding turreting,& linking the rear end of MK1 escort axles, lots of info....

I have a purchased a MK1 escort recently which has had the 4 link boxes fitted and diamonds to the rear axle, the shocks were fouling the link bars, it has slipper springs lowered 2".

The car is immaculate even painted underneath a really good shell, so i want to finish the rear end on this so i can tarmac track it next yr, i have decided to complete the rear with turrets and either panhard or watts linkage.

I have found a fabrication company to do the work but they have limited knowledge on turret positioning so i would like to ask if there is anywhere or anyone to speak to regarding critical measurements for this type of fabrication work.

I would be very grateful to any information from anyone who has done this or does this kind of work.

    Tia... TV

Firstly I don't profess to be any kind of expert, but the shocks should be no where near the link bars? See photo's. It may be very old now but find a copy of the Rally Prep Manual - http://www.doublegmotorsport.com/rsprep/prepindex.html - it has ALL the info you require in this regard.
Admittedly the pictures are of cars without leaf springs which would align with the chassis rails and so the shock tower / mount would have been adjusted in location to suit?

The shocks will be close if he's not turreted as he says. The turret boxes can only go in one place really-directly above the axle and tight against the rear inner tubs. That top pic is actually of my old car-and the rear wheels fouled against the shock and I had to modify the top box mount. If you get the nicer round turret boxes I think they angle the top of the shock in a bit to aid clearance. Have a look through my build to get the idea of positioning.

Get the car level on axle stands and remove the rear wheels-use a plumb bob above the axle centre line and pop a couple of punch holes into the inner tub above the axle-if you look at my pics you can see 2 punch marks one above the other on my inner tubs-this gives the centreline of turret box-mark each side leaving enough to weld to and cut out the rest as seen in the pics.

You can see the 2 punch marks inside the marker pen lines here.

Round boxes are the preferred type.
