    Pinto not starting

Hi, I have a 205 Pinto I bought a couple of months ago that was in a hot rod and was running apparently. I've put it in my mk2 Escort but unable to get it to fire.

I am using temporary wiring at the moment to get it started which looks like this

With the engine set to TDC

This is the rotor arm and the HT lead positions

Sometimes it doesn't try and fire at all and other times it spits fuel out of the Weber 32/36 carb.

There is fuel getting to the carb and also tried with starting spray. Sometimes that causes the engine to bog down and turn over very slowly.

Compression is even between 125 and 130 psi on all 4 cylinders and the spark plugs are sparking.

Is there anything I missing here?

you have the timing 180 degrees out, with the dizzy set no1 to fire the pointer on the cam sprocket should be at the bottom not top, theres actually a dot punch on the head for it to line up with

Hi Graham, is that the notch where the blue mark is on the dizzy housing? That should be lined up with the where the rotor is facing which I think is at TDC.

ok, from the top, you dont quite have the crank at TDC, it needs to go slightly further clockwise to line up with the last grove on the left side of the pulley, but even then you have the cam in the wrong position, so turn the crank one whole revolution. that will put the engine number 1 to fire.

to put the dizzy in the factory correct position ( i say factory correct as you can put it in in other positions and get it running) you need to take the dizzy out and refit it so the vac module would be at the top of your picture and the rotor arm pointing at the blue mark. that is the position for no1 plug lead so you will need to swap the plug leads around in the dizzy cap. starting at the blue mark its 1,3,4,2 going clockwise

Hope that wiring diagram isn't correct or just a simplified diagram.
If it is correct once the engine fires you can't turn it off.

Yeah it was very simple wiring just to get it going. The fuel pump was on a seperate switch.

Good news is that it fired up today like there was never a problem! I can start on working out the wiring loom that came with the body now.

This is where I set the timing in the end.

    Thanks Graham and all.
No problem, glad its going, ideally you still need to set the timing up with a timing light as you could still be a good few degrees out

    Re: Pinto not starting

just to hijack the thread a little. I have had an issue and this just gave me a light bulb moment. How much difference will 1 tooth make in degrees. My timing is lined up on the head but is at the wrong end of the scale i.e first mark not the last on the crank. is that about 12degs btdc

I am thinking i have slipped a tooth not sure how ?

    Re: Pinto not starting

one tooth on the crank sprocket would advance the cam by about 9.5 degrees
