    Pinto conversion into Mk1 escort from Mk2 escort

    Hey everyone.

    I have a '68 Mk1 Escort I am restoring. I am currently looking at dropping a 2l Pinto into her. I have the opportunity to buy one that has been installed into a MK2 Esky wagon. I am assuming that it would already have sump modifications to fit the mk2 esky.

    My questions is, would this mean it would fit into my MK1 escort with no further need to modify the sump?

    Also, I remember reading somewhere years ago that the earlier mk1s had slightly smaller trans tunnel, does anyone know whether this is true or not?

    I have read up on this conversion for many many hours but cant seem to find this info.

    Hi, think you'll be ok to drop that straight into your Mk1. Re the tunnel, never heard of the early Mk1's having a smaller tunnel, and if you're fitting a standard 4 speed gearbox it shouldn't be an issue.
    You may need to alter the gear stick hole, cut a section of the tunnel strengthener out and use gearbox lowering blocks. Nothing too difficult.
    Post up some info as you go.

    if its coming with its matching gearbox you will probably have to cut a bit of the back of the gear lever hole

    Find out what crossmember the engine was in on the mk2 if its a custom welded sump (Could be world cup crossmember or standard ford one)

    If its rs2000 alloy sump it will fit on standard mounts no problem

    Tunnel will need some opening slightly to get a bit of clearance. I used a scissor jack and 2 bits of wood

    Then cut out the gear shift hole and flip it around 180 degree's plenty of guides on here

    Thanks a lot for the info much appreciated. Unfortunately I just went to buy it and someone had got in there first. Ah well. Appreciate the help anyway and it does answer other questions I had about fitting one in a mk1 vs mk2.

    The gearstick hole thing is only an issue when fitting a 5 speed type 9 isn't it? I only had to do that mod when fitting a type 9 in my car as it previously only had a 4 speed fitted.

    no, factory RS2000 already had gearstick hole modification

    Ok, not that mines a factory RS anyway. The mate that had my car before me must've already done that when I bought it off him then.

    If I remember right you also have to use an electric fan because Slightly less room north to south.

    indeed mk1 escorts came from the factory with an electric fan. which is why it was said they gave same power as mk2 rs2000 even though mk2 had a better exhaust manifold

    I think it's helpful to trim the rear edge of the top rad/slam panel towards the front of the car, this allows the rad to lean forward a bit at the top giving a bit more space. You can also put a step in the lower rad crossmember, again this allows the rad to sit a bit further forward aswell.
    Mines got the top mod done but not the lower mod, it will get that bit modded in the future though.

    I moved mine forwards top and bottom






    I made the bottom cut out strengthened but they can be bought to weld in.
