    2.4L Duratec Build

I have the green light to build my new Duratec 2.4L tarmac rally engine. I do not feel confident enough to put the engine together myself nor to start porting cylinder heads myself. I will therefore either buy a complete engine from a reputable supplier or buy their parts and have it assembled locally (Australia).

Investigations to date have led me to looking at SBD and Mountune who both have 2.4L offerings with claims of 327 and 310Hp respectively (pinch of salt taken). Still trying to find suppliers of Cosworth parts (didn't have any luck with Duratec on Modatek or coordsport). Who else in the UK are big on Duratec that would be worth contacting?

I am not sure that I want to mix and match parts from various suppliers as I do not have the time, finances nor desire to reinvent the wheel or undertake my own development program...

Roger carroll in Adelaide is meant to be a bit of a guru, have you spoke to him? He might be able to cut down the leg work

Paul Gardner Racing engines in England build a good 2.4 Duratec Rally spec engine.. He should be able to give you the price of a complete engine dynoed, crated and ready to install. I am not sure what shiping charges would be.

Forest - cheers will look into them

Nursie - I have spoken with RC. He makes alot of parts to fit Duratecs into Escorts but does not build engines. He has given me the name of his head porting guy although I am not sure if I want to get a new one done or whether to stick with a tried and tested design (eg SBD, Montune etc)

Also, is there much to be gained/lost in using the management systems sold by the likes of SBD/Montune or is one system much like another? I was thinking of using Motec which, as I assume there is not a ready-to-go map, would require extensive dyno time to tune vs using a pre-programmed one that comes with the engine?

Which ever company builds your engine Oz should be able to supply you with their preffered management system ready mapped and dynoed. If they can't supply those two things then you are better looking elsewhere.

I didn't write my last post very well. Mountune and SBD each offer their own management systems (as you say they should be able to). SBD's is called 'MBE' (never heard of it) and Mountune just calls it a 'motorsport ECU'. I guess I was asking are all ECU's created equally? Never used one so have absolutely no idea!

Equal - no! Pretty much the same - yes. Most will do everything expected for engine control, some will even have good logging potential and upper market units will have functions most may not even understand let alone use! Very good systems are available for sub £1k so spending more seems extravagant! MBE is a known unit, just maybe not WIDELY known. Obvs. Haltec and Motec will be choices in Aus - local support can be essential sometimes!

Perhaps another contact would be Mike dale, he tunes evos quite alot so is pretty cluely on what would need to be done.

A worry id have with no ECU support in aust from there places where else motec is meant to be very good with aftermarket support

Mike knows his Evo and Pinto onions. Not sure how much he deals with Duratecs if at all. One way to find out......
