Capri propshaft to fit mk1 Escort

I'm looking for some help; I'll be working with the following:

Pinto engine - type E 4 speed gearbox - Capri 2 piece propshaft - atlas axle

everything but the typeE came from the same car

SO THE QUESTION: do I need to shorten the propshaft? I know I should just try to put everything on the car and see but It's a bit inconvinient at the moment, so if anyone had the same experience and knows exactly what there is to do or if it just simply fits, id appreciate the info, but if not then Ill just wait till I'll have the shell ready.

    Thank you

It's not something that you would want to take a guess at, even an educated guess!
It needs assembling first really to see what needs to be done.
An the other thing is why use a 2 piece propshaft anyway, a one piece would be better.
Not sure where you are in Europe but in the UK you can get a propshaft made up to your own spec for about £150-£200 max.

Apologies Graham, yes you're right. I just vaguely remember my original English prop wouldn't fit when I changed to an Atlas.

no apology required, unless we are talking about engines im often wrong,

i haven't laid a spanner on an escort for 15 years, and haven't done any serious work on one for 30 odd

Re: Capri propshaft to fit mk1 Escort

Hi guys thanks for the replys...around here these cars are rare like penguins so just getting a propshaft is not really an "easy" job, the germans are the closest but their prices are sometimes hilarious (i've seen some basic Koeln axles being advertised for 400-550 euro...explain this ), and getting it made, well, theres other things I have to adress first with this project and honestly, I don't see why not use the propshaft if it may fit? Yes ofcourse Its not a thing that should be guessed, thats why I stated in the original question "if anyone has already done it".

Second thing is I work at a machinig shop and shortening the prop takes me about an hour or so and no cost at all so...as said its a stock engine, not too much power and no need for a strong single piece prop yet.

Main point of this post was also to be able to reply to private messages, so I hope I didn't waste your time with this

Of course I'll still apreciate if somebody, who by any chance has dealt with this same situation, sees this post and has a straight up answer

    anyway, thank you! cheers

sadly for you its unlikely anyone will give you the answer you want, because here in the uk no one would shorten a capri prop to fit an escort

you have both ends probably just as easy to make a 1 piece the right length than shorten a 2 piece if you have the skill and workshop facilities.

True but not the balancing equipment - its not just a chop, cut and glue it back together job!

in theory but you wouldn't want to join a prop in the middle, so making a one piece from a two piece is probably a non starter

yes and know, ive done it a few of times, i once shortened an Opel Gt prop which i did on the car, i simply used a DTI to ensure it ran true, it was perfect, although it has to be said an opel GT prop is only about a foot long.

the others i did were all bmw, and i either changed the gearbox flange or shortened the front section, i just make sure everything was square, but teh big difference between a bmw prop and a ford one is the bmw doesnt have a yoke or sliding joint at the gearbox end, just a fixed flange, i wouldnt try doing the same on an escort prop

I was suggesting just re using the ends and completely re-tubing with what would need to be a far thicker tube given the length needed now. I would never reccomend trying to weld a prop in the middle.

Hmm you are on to something...I'll consider making my own one piece if the two piece doesn't fit, should be a fun little project and I do have the right equipment for it.
For now though I'll just leave it be and focus on the shell, when the time comes I'll post an update to this,
thank you all for your inputs, opinions do help!
