Mt75 gearbox a viable alternative to the type 9?

Hello chaps. I've been looking into fitting a type 9 into my mk1... But used prices are getting mental for a Junker type 9.

What other options are out there?

Has anyone recorded the fitting of a RWD Mt75? Is it difficult?

I know a type 9 isn't a straight swap but it's doable with excellent guides. If I'm looking at Mazda Rx8 kind of work for anything else I may (reluctantly) stick to my 4 speed.

i knew someone who fitted an mt75 into an escort, it worked well and couldn't of been very difficult because the chap that did it wasn't very technical

Mt75 gearbox a viable alternative to the type 9?

    Hi richb77.
Yrs ago I fitted a mt75 to 2.1 pinto into a rwd mk3 escort. Worked lovelly. Brill box and ratio.s seemed ok for a quick car.
But then I made tunnel to suit. I know this won't help on fitting in a standard escort shell. And at mo I'm using a mazda rx8 6 cog to a st170 going in a rwd fiesta.

Its a big box so you need to get creative with jacks and big hammers. There are a few threads about using the Mazda boxes - strong, plentiful? cheap - need adapter plate and that's all!

Mazda rx8, 6 cog for me.
Cheaper and stronger than type 9. Admit ratio.s are bit lower. But still usable. And short shifter.

What's the supply of second hand MT75 Rwd gearboxes like? I know certain Sierra's and Scorpios had them but they must be getting thin on the ground by now. Transit gear ratios would be totally unsuitable for a car.

Was there ever a straight cut gear kit made for one appart from the 4x4 gearbox?

i have a MT75 gearbox in my Taunus Tc2, it works good with short shifter. oke no escort but the MT75 box is a bit bigger so hammering will be needed.

only downside no gearkits or verry verry expensive

    Ford Taunus Going RS2300 16v with 48s!!!

One thing to note with the MT-75 from a Sierra or Granada/Scorpio is that it does not have a slip yoke on the output shaft, so you really need to make a propshaft with a slip joint for use on a live axle car.

IMO the MT-75 is a viable option if you don't need a gearkit and the ratios suit you (the 16v ones from Scorpios have a higher 1st, 3.61:1). Sort the gear shift and it's quite nice. It will take a bit more torque than a type 9 too.

The later boxes (at least from Scorpio 2.3) are made for a 240 mm clutch - good or bad, depending on what you need...

The new(ish - 2011 and onwards) Mustangs uses an MT-82 gearbox, from Getrag.

Mustang users don't really love it...

MT75 is a good strong box, shift easier then Type9s do.

Straight fit onto 4 cylinder engines.
On a zetec you can use silvertop 1800 220mm zetec clutch and flywheel setup.
The normal spigot bearing that you use with type 9.
Starter motor that comes from the donor car (sierra dohc).
You need to move the pivot point for release bearing arm forward, or fit release bearing extender that westfield/caterham suppliers sell.
The original driveshaft from the sierra dohc has a sliding piece before the bearing (in middle of shaft) that mounts in the tunnel.
So you would need to make a bespoke shaft if fitted in a escort mk1/mk2.
