    Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

Don't know if this will be of interest, but I decided to restore an old Ford special about 18 months ago.I've always built cars ,but hadn't built a Ford 4 banger since the late 60's.After a long while thinking,I decided to run a 2.0 Duratec.....this has put me right outside my comfort zone...never used a computer car in my life (except for the gofers).I hope you guys can help, when I get there.

This is where it all started a few body parts, and some plans drawn of the back of a fag packet, and a few old parts....

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

When I started the project I was going to use a Small Block Chevy, but I thought I might kill myself,so a Duratec it was.I know this sounds strange ,but it would have been easier to use the Chevy....the Duratec is the same length (go figure) but deck hight is really big.(V8's are very low) When I had to figure in all the bits I need to run this motor it has been quite a challenge. My friend set up the cassis on his jig,and I could not wait for it to come home.

Some more mock up at home, a Ted Halibrand grill (same man who made the wheels ) came from a really great guy from the States,Johnny Fast, the back axel is a Winters Quick Change and a new Duratec turned up.Now the fun really starts.

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

The first problem I had was the original oil filter.....motor would not fit inside the rails.....this was solved using a remote filter plate.Problem two came from the gear box.....the Rocket box was a little long but those nice guys at Kirky put a hole for the gear shift, but I didn't like it so a solution came in the shape of a Quaif short tail shaft (I am learning...didnt know they did one,but I do know)......

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

The motor needed some mounts,so Retro Ford supplied some engine plates, and I fabbed some 'vintage looking' mounts with Transit rubbers. The gear box needs some 'trick' mount and that is still in 'corn flake' mode. The motor has not been mounted yet as more adjustments need to be made before final welding in.

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

Now,aside from the computer,I had two problems that were causing me some sleepless nights.....the steering, and the fuel tank.I had an original Schroder steering box,but this was beyond repair..and I was just about to buy a new one (they are still made) when I bumped into a rodding buddy who knew about my car.....he said he may be able to help.....this is the drawing....and the box. This was carved from billet, sand blasted and coated in Dow 7 coating...it looks better than the original and has much better ratios.

The fuel tank on sprints holds about 36 gallons .....far too much weight......so I needed about a 11 gallon tank....a drawing and some corn flake packet templates got it roughed in....FOZ racing in the States came up with the poly tank.

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

I needed some instant gratification so decided to dress up the motor.I did not like the plastic cam covers, and started looking for a replacement.I could not find one I liked in the UK,but a friend runs a Duratec in a modern sprint in the States, and he put me onto a shop that helps him out.A few weeks passed and A.R.E set me a cover.I think its a nice part, but I wanted to cover the plug wires. My friend made a finned cover in billet,it was sand blasted, painted and the fins polished...I think it looks cool.

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

The water rail was supplied by Retro Ford...this will be polished, after all the bumps are removed, and all the holes I don't need filled. The header is mine...Retro Ford supplied the flange(that Dave is a cool guy and has helped lots),Cone Engineering in the States supplied the cone, dahhhh, and I bought some dairy bends,(didn't know there were so many radius bends available) then my mate Stainless Steve put it together......Ive just had an auger style silencer, and the rest of the system should be built over the next few weeks.

Well thats as far as it goes.....I am in the States for the next few weeks so work won't resume till I get back home.I have been working on the pedals, and these need to go in next...this is what I have come up with so far,but they need some work.Once the pedals are in,the steering box can go in ,there are a few body panels to finish.Oh ...and Ive got a cool fuel cap....a Halibrand/Beck part. That gold thing on the body side is my dry sump oil tank, its a little worn, but can be rescued.....again thats it for now.....

Sambo.....I am glad you like it....wait until you see the engine breather I have planned....if I pull it off it could look good. What is it with plastic parts?

A little while back I mentioned a friend who has a midget sprint with a Duratec.I have tried to read as much as I can on this site about Duratec's.........well I read about the maximum angles that they could be run at(can't remember what they are),but check out CSG's in his car A few modded Stateside Duratec's he sent me photos of.....

Well spotted......she's as stock as a rock......but,I'am in North Carolina in three weeks and a Fatman Fabrications set of lowered uprights and lowered steering arms have my name on them...I dont want to change it too far from stock, but a steering and brake upgrade could be on the cards.I have used her for the last seven years and this is not a great driving car,but I love her to bits....................have you got any shots of your 62? would love to see them.

Re: Duratec powered vintage Sprint car

Still getting over the jet lag,but managed to get out and got a little work done. The hood has been trimmed and the cowl moved forward, managed to get some vintage hood latches, and fitted these.....I set the hood up to be side opening, but if I can get latches to match ,I am thinking it could be cool if both sides open. Now only some minor adjustments to get good gaps and that will finish the body. These were not sophisticated cars and little attention was paid to fit and finish, but I will try my best to get it right.Had the dash cut out,so this can now be fitted....no decision on gauges yet.....but there is no drive from the gear box so I'll have to work somthing out.Made a corn flake box template for the breather plate, this will be finned and an open breather fitted. The light was failing so time to finish for the day, waiting for some more parts to arrive, hope they come tomorrow.
