    Re: Anyone running Gaz Coilovers?

I have them and they are great. They came with 275lb springs and I have some 350lb ones to throw in next. I think for the $ they are hard to beat.

    Cheers

I thought of getting them but went genuine Billy’s and Rix struts. Think it was slightly cheaper and the Rix stub axles are better quality but there’s not a lot in it, person choice in the end.

My tarmac rally Mk1 Escort (with boat achor Pinto) has them front and back. 275lb springs rings a bell but I have some slightly heavier. Been on the car since built in 2012 and have not faulted them yet. No back to back comparison data but the car handle very well (especially in the wet). Anti-dive kit used and 22mm(?) bar

Thanks for the reviews guys, sound like they would be ideal for my use. I heard anti-dive kit makes a big difference too. Just a 4 door mongrel but like to it see how it handles with decent front suspension, got gaz at the rear already.

I had wondered if 275ib were too stiff for the road, as I only used to run 146ib springs on RS2000 struts back in the 90’s.

Any pinto engined Anglia, escort etc in fast road trim, i*d say 275lb fronts absolutely no probs.

All Gaz gear has a market, they offer a great re build service & their stuff works. Value for money is bang on.

I have them on mine, as Matt75 says, for the $ I dont think you can beat them.
I dont have mine on the road yet, so cant comment on ride, but I never had any issues with the last set of Gaz I had.

    Thanks, Nice discs!

I'll definitely be going GAZ. My top mounts are just std so need to change them too, more cost.

Cheers beeRS. Just out of interest, came across these for sale. Are these fitted with Nissan Silvia top mounts, will the strut insert have been bodged to fit?

    Re: Anyone running Gaz Coilovers?

Front suspension sorted! Courtesy of local lad building up his with roller tops. kyb 250Ib springs, gas inserts, added 4Ib helpers to bring it down a bit. On inspection, mine were completely bodged by previous owner (as usual on this car! to the point of being unsafe! Had to scrap the struts as they had drilled out steering arms and caliper mounts, bearings welded you name it! Drives superb! Now the back to sort, scrap the lowering blocks as on its arse. Getting there piece by piece :thumb

2 1/4 inch springs have a different rate compared to the standard Escort springs, there is a formula somewhere to convert. However I'm running 325lb with my front coil overs and don't notice it being too hard.

    Re: Anyone running Gaz Coilovers?

I would use 275 lb front springs on a fast road x flow. Pinto power fast road would use 325 lb.

If you fancy driving like Miss Daisey ? X flow drop to 225,s pinto drop to 275,s

.They are a tried and tested spring rate that we have used for many years.

mike your correct, 200lb is 200lb whether the spring is 1inch dia or 6inch dia,

So explain the difference then - std 146lb spring @ 4/5" diameter against a 250/275lb spring @ 2.25" diameter that produce similar handling?

Couple of things: first of all the springrate is a static parameter of the spring.
If you put 146 lb force on a 146 lb/in spring it will deflect 1 inch.
What is more important is the dynamic behaviour of the spring, how it reacts to the transition of being compressed a bit to alot and back. This is a science of its own but the diameter of the spring, the diameter of the coils and the number of coils are of influence here.
A 2.25" dia spring of 250 lb/in with 10 coils has a lot better dynamic behaviour than a std Mk2 Escort spring of 5"diameter of 146 lb/in and 7 coils. This dynamic behaviour is what defines handling.
Also when driving a car with 250 lb/in springs and compare the handling to driving the same car with 146 lb/in springs would suggest all the rest of the suspension is exactly the same. Is it?
Guess not, when changing to 2.25" springs one changes dampers, suspension settings, wheels and tyres, antirollbar etc.

Thats kinda what I read somewhere, my interpretation of it got lost in translation

145 and 225 are light years apart on an escort. i sometimes wonder if people fitting high spring rates for the road (i see 300 quoted) either have fake springs or no dampers

To those who have had them for a while...how are they lasting? I thought about them but was told the quality wasn't great so plumped for billies and the rix stuff. Did fancy Nitrons but the price went from £2k to £3k overnight!!
