Transplant to donor head (1.6 pinto) just can't get clearances

Hi guys, hoping you can help. I've got a 1.6 head which I've swapped cam, followers, valves over to another head. This was because of a snapped exhaust bolt. Everything moved over but I can't get any valve clearance at all. Feeler guage just won't go through with lobe of cam pointing up. I've wound the follower adjustment all the way out and all the way in with no luck. The cam which came with the "new" head was standard 2.0 cam, the way I've put in is also a 2.0. the donor head came from a cortina I believe. Are there different lift for different springs? Could there be different cam bearings playing a part? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dave

if you cant get clearance then you have probably put 1600 valves in a 2.0 head, 1600 valves are longer by about 2mm.

springs and cam bearing have no effect on valve clearances

Thanks Graham, I'm starting to think that. If I change the valve's, could I still put the 2.0 head on the 1.6 block. I appreciate it would lower compression. This may not be a bad thing as I am trying to blow through with a Renault carb and T25. Thanks for your help, Dave

    Thanks very much.

I'll need to make a decision now.

    2.0 on 1.6. buy 1.6 valves or get a 2.0 bottom end.

2.0 bottom end probably be cheaper than new valves

you mean buy 2.0 valves ? should be plenty about after big valve upgrades.

Yes, sorry, that's what I mean.

Should I just stick with turboing the 1.6 or stick the 2.0 head on the lower compression ready for turbo?

Any ideas what the CR is for 2.0 head on 1.6?

    Cheers, Dave

I have a box of stock 2.0 valve train bits, not sure if I have the valves but can have a look what I have if you want?

I have a 205 bottom end here that was running a turbo. I was told that it was a Turbo Technics built engine when I bought my car about 7 years ago. However, I cannot confirm this.
I pulled it out, as I'm now running a 2.1 n/a. and used the head on my new engine.
I would consider selling the pistons and rods from this block, but I honestly don't know their value.
There is nothing stamped on the head of the pistons, as I can only assume that they were machined down to lower the compression. Pistons sit below deck.
New set of rings and these would probably be good to go for a 2L turbo build.

Morning, I actually went back to the bloke and got all the other bits apart from one exhaust valve. Do you have a single exhaust valve in your box of bits?

    Cheers, Dave

Excuse me, I mean inlet. The larger diameter of the two.

This head was off a cortina. Found this on another thread:

According to Mr. Haynes the Cortina Pinto had inlet 42mm for both 1.6 and 2l Exhaust 34.2 (1.6) 36mm (2l).

After measuring it looks like a 2.0 cortina head.
