rear axle problems

hi guys been a while since iv posted here so iv run into problems with my mk1 escort i have an english axle on rear with an diisc brake conversion an as of knw an welded diff due to damaging previous one an not bought an lsd which im on hunt for also but problem is car keeps on shearing the rear studs off did it previously on driver side but thought it must have had loose nuts ect but knw its doing it on other side ii have banded steels on reaer an front 10j rears with an 245 40 16 trye on rear i have had some help with bits to do to remedy problem but can some 1 help as to were i can buy or have it sorted i was told that i shud have an ring or spigot ring on rear disc as wer the wheel sits but i dnt have on the discs on my car have ordered new stus an nuts but need to sort the other issues out before hand

If I understand you correctly the wheel studs are sheering off? Probably at or around the disc mounting flange? You have a) very wide wheel and tyre combination b) larger diameter wheel and tyre c) only 4 studs d) a 'free' floating disc. What I believe is happening is the tyre/wheel combination has a considerable mass and rotational energy being applied to 4 relatively 'weak' studs and when you hit the brakes, the disc clamping force tries to stop the disc against the studs while been 'driven by the wheel force! If you drill two holes in the disc flange and half shaft flange, countersink the disc flange and tap the half shaft flange so the two can be locked together, I think the problem may go away? Four additional fixings would be even better than two IMO!

welded diff, huge wheels and tyres and presumably a lot of power? im not surprised your snapping studs particularly if they are 45/50 year old studs. if your lucky NEW studs and the correct wheel nut torque may solve your issue, sounds more like you need an axle upgrade though!

I really don't think the problem is too few bolts, or too much power/torque/grip.

I have many many launch control launches (meaning dumping the clutch at over 1 bar of boost), with drag slicks (both radial and diagonal) on trackbite with my car, same kind of 4 studs. I have broken everything but wheel studs :-D

If the discs and/or wheels are not centered I would say that is the problem. Maybe new, fresh, studs will keep up better but I think the root of the problem is that the disc and/or wheel does not sit true.

I assume given the size off tyre and an english axle I assume you are running a huge dish on the wheel. I would have thought this would put a huge side load on the studs. Is it possible to fit a slighlty thicker stud it wouldn't be hard to do and maybe use a locating screw on the disc as many modern cars do.

Your banded steels probably 50 year old stud holes in them which may be worn allowing movement.

An upgrade to an atlas axle (a lot wider) and a change of wheel with less offset may remove a lot of the side loading on the studs ?? Just thoughts
