Splines look tighter / finer as well on the shorter stud - could it be metric thread ?
Just had some useful info
Neil Fletcher Standard Mk2 studs have the same spline as a Mk1 stud and they are the same length - the thread is the main difference in that the 12 mm metric thread is very slightly coarser than the Mk1 7/16 UNF thread but you need to look closely to tell. In actual fact it was so easy to mix them up that Ford put a special mark a bit like a screwdriver slot in the end of a Mk2 stud so people could tell the difference. Those are not normal Mk2 studs.
I'd not be an expert on later 80s stuff but I think that cars like Sierras and such like from that era had a metric stud with a bigger spline. I have heard tell of guys whose Mk2s damaged the normal splines drilling them out slightly and fitting the later metric stud - maybe........just maybe that's what those are but I'dnot be sure!
