Mk1 / 2 steering rack

Can anyone tell me what the std ratio is on Mk1 & 2 steering racks, and is there any difference between the mk1 and mk2 racks? i know some are short stem and other long, i have an early Mk1 which appears to have a short stem rack but im unsure if a Mk2 short stem one will fit????

think the std ratios are the same - 3.5/1 ? mex etc 2.9 and qr are 2.4 just the rod ends have different thread and hence tr ends are mix and match

Thanks, ill be using Rs2000 TRE's, steering arms and bilsteins, im just not sure if the short stem on the Mk2 rack will fit my early Mk1 using a grp4 long knuckle??

you will want the mk2 rs tre's ( they usualy describe as green ) imp taper and metric rack arm threads. i cant see why not but nothing ever fits

early mk1 still had the short stem rack as i recall ( mine does) just the mex had long ?

Yes its all Mk2 parts im using TRE's etc, just wondered if the Mk1 steering shaft spline was the same for the Mk1 short stem rack as a Mk2. Cheers

Think they do as my mk1 as far as I know has a mk2 rack and I've just fitted a group4 cast steering knuckle, as old leather union one looked like a burst couch. Fitted the rack fine but a little tight on steering spline but will need to get longer knuckle bolts for the g4 as original bolts are only 30mm long and will need 40mm.
I dis buy Rs2000 track rod ends and they also fitted onto rack but frustratingly the new tapers are a little too narrow for the carpi arms and wont tighten up / keeps spinning so ordered standard ones which hopefully will fir but as alladin say's nothing ever fits. Got to remember its 47 years old and had all sorts done over the years.

I fitted escort mk2 steering rack on my mk1 with no problem. The only difference are the tie rod ends.

Mk1 and MK2 steering coupling splines are identical. The Mk2 had metric threads on the track rods unlike the Mk1's imperial thread, hence the reason for the RS 2000 genuine Ford green trackrod ends which were metric on the trackrod thread and imperial on the taper for the steering arm on the strut.
