Cosworth oil pickup and pump in pinto

    Hi
is it a worth while mod to use the Cosworth oil pump and pickup pipe with the spray jets ( bottom of pistons ) into a hot pinto engine
or will it affect oil flow in other areas like cam spray bar

it would be pointless modification full race circuit racing pintos dont need it, not even dry sumped ones which have less oil being flung around inside the crank case

If a Cosworth pump can supply sufficient flow and pressure for a turbo, two camshafts AND oil squirters, it's hardly going to struggle with a single cam pinto! But as G says - its overkill.

Cosworth oil pickup and pump in pinto

Pinto rods have oil jets already squirting at the piston don’t they ?

Cosworth ones don’t hence the spray bar

they do, but they more squirt at the bore than piston, steel rods dont have them so most steel rod engines dont have any form of squirter

I did a rather complicated Cosworth spraybar addition to an RS2000 oil pickup because I had fitted Cosworth rods to a fast Pinto. I then found out you could just notch the rods to get a similar effect, I’m not sure if the crank scraper I fitted would negate the notch option

That doesn’t make sence graham? Did you type that right

So if cosworth rod is used you need oil spray bar or rod mod? Yes

If steel rod is used then what?

yes i did type it right, the cosworth spray bar is all about piston cooling, if you dont have the extreme heat of a turbo you dont need it whatever sort of rods you have. theer have been a zillion engines built with nothing, it doesnt hurt, but if you must you can file a notch in the rod to help deflect oil up.

below is a picture of a factory bmw rod with a notch as it came from the factory
