Need Some Insight
One for Graham probably - i'd value your insight and remedy thoughts. I couldn't turn the engine over by hand on Saturday - would only turn 90 degrees one way and same back again between hard stops so I figured a bent valve and this is what I opened up today! I should have guessed when I took the cams out and three of the buckets were higher than the rest . . . . !

Questions - I've never seen a valve (or 3x) break like this - valve stems very crystalline - very odd. Assuming I can get the remaining stems out what is the likelihood of guide damage? One of the inlets has taken a knock that's left a ding in it - ok for re-use? Pistons look a bit battle scarred - i've seen worse so i'm guessing they are reusable? Anything else I should look out for that may be hiding? Cylinder #1 plug hole took a beating and the 1st couple of threads are tight, but plug tightens down ok so i'll keep an eye on it.
Don't you love classic cars - just finished all the electrics and now this - this car does not want to be finished ! Sorry its Photobucket - but this site hosting limit is too picture postcard small!

Re: Need Some Insight
cam timing has slipped somehow, you might have 3 broken valves, but looking at the second pic i can see 4 lots of valve piston contact, infact i sure a cant see a lighter 5th mark

Re: Need Some Insight
Oh yeah - there are little 'half moon' dings on all 4 pistons, just not as severe! Would you risk the lighter contact ones?

Re: Need Some Insight
i wouldn't mind betting the lighter contact ones are now very slightly bent, may even still seal, but i would want to risk them hammering themselves straight again.
what is it a zetec? surely valves for that arent too expensive?

Re: Need Some Insight
Correct ID and valve cost from Burtons is about £10 -11 + vat so £12 x 8No. = £100 just in valves and as a refurb'er guy I spoke to this morning said - snapped valves possible guide cracking - sounded reasonable! so that'd be another £100+ and then seat cutting another £100+ - All gets a bit spendy!

May as well get a port job at the same time and some cams !!!! Or maybe another engine, put that one to 1 side for the next stage (as there always is one). I bought a duratec that was partially stripped cost me over £100 in gasket and bits and bobs. Soon ramps up
