    Mk2 escort ..clutch issue

I drove my escort in the street for the first time in years. But i have an issue with the clutch....it makes a racket reversing it up the driveway then once on the road i can feel the clutch slipping......i think there was a leak from the type 9 front seal as there was lots of fluid in the bellhousing when i bought it and i did forget to replace it when i put the engine back in....could a leaky seal cause clutch slippage and is there anyway to tell if its leaking without taking the whole thing apart

Oil and dry clutches are not the best companions! A leaking seal will easily contaminate the clutch and promote slippage.

A clutch can't sound any different in reverse - it only turns the same way. So this leaves gearbox or diff for investigation - i'd guess diff as reverse will induce backlash in the gears and some noise if the lash is excessive?

I'd take the box out, pull clutch off flywheel. Change at least the plate (if it's wet or slightly contaminated with oil) Fit new front seal on box. re fit , job done.
Road test, if noise is still there( probs will be) pull the diff out & send to a good diff man for further inspection.

If you have the parts in stock ? You could start sunday & finish monday. Lets face it, theres F.A to do at the moment.

As above the gearbox needs to be removed to carry out a full inspection of the clutch assembly and whilst you are doing check you haven't fitted the drive disc the wrong way round. You can also fit a new oil seal to the front of the gearbox whilst it's out.

Is it a cable or hydraulic clutch fitted to your car?

The noise seems to come from the gearbox area rather than the diff...i have a horrible feeling its the box thats gubbed but ill get it out soon...im going to buy a set of jackable ramps so i can get underneath safely then ii start again..... what kind of costs am i looking at for a gearbox rebuild should that be the case
