    Cable clutch to hydraulic

    Hey Guys,

I have a 184mm twin plate clutch using a cable but I find it very hard to use based on my size 14 feet and the power steering in the way. Its incredibly hard to get a good angle on as I have to stab the pedal with my toes and lose a lot of my strength.

My question is if I moved to a hydraulic clutch would this make it easier to press the pedal.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Hydraulic clutches are usually lighter than cable, plus you can alter cylinder sizes change pedal pressure/travel

Smaller feet modification / adaptation may be easier long term - hydraulics and cylinder sizes . . . . always messy discussion

Its a 184mm Xtreme race clutch using a datsun 180b release bearing. Clutch works perfectly it's just hard to finesse. I run a W58 toyota Supra gearbox if that's relevant

Don't know the Datsun release bearing but make sure it contacts the springs of the cover on their other edges.

when you say hard to finesse, you talking about smooth engagement as opposed to being snatchy and off/on? because by nature thats what a twin plate 184 race clutch is like.

your release bearing does it have a rounded or a flat face? it needs a rounded face to work with the flat fingers on the cover

I use something like this on the 184mm clutch.

The engagement is fine and it works perfectly Im talking more about reducing the pressure needed to push the pedal.

then a hydraulic system should/could be lighter.

    Re: Cable clutch to hydraulic

Here we go, we are into another minefield again with Escort pedal boxes. I had similar problems with a twin plate AP on a NA Cosworth engine 30 years ago and I changed it to Hydraulic with 0.7 master cylinder. But beware it's not a five minitue job to do and get right.

My problem was not only a stiff clutch pedal but it was also losing travel due to the rubber bush at the bulkhead compessing with the heat from the manifold. You also need to make sure the cable has no tight bends in it and is well protected from the manifold as this can cause your symptoms.

It your car has been fitted with a large gearbox tunnel then I can simpathize with your problem, I have size nine feet and I keep hitting different pedals when I move the car with work boots on.
