    Low cost duratec

Hi all, Might be getting ahold of a 2.0 duratec for free from a friend, my question is what parts do I need to change it to rwd format. I think a rx8 gearbox is coming up trumps in terms of gearbox it seems like a adapter plate would be needed unsure on which clutch and flywheel combo needed. Every build I have seen is using a dry Sump, can a wet Sump be used also other than a water rail what else do I need? I'm trying to build a shopping list, I tried searching the site for the answers but everything was performance oriented and out of my budget

theres no actual reason why they have to be dry sumped, but i suspect a lot are because its both quite a tall engine and when used really hard they seem to benefit from a better oiling system

There's a wet sump kit available from people like Burton's and others for approx £500 for a RWD conversion for the Duratec, You might also need the oil filter relocation kit. You'll need a suitable set of engine mounts for your desired X member. Appart from your water rail you'll also need a suitable hose set and some use the Fiest ST 150 clutch and flywheel for their conversions.

The next thing on your shopping list are the most expensive items, Throttle boddies and engine managenent with a decent exhaust manifold and system which's going to set you back at least £2.500 as a bare minimum. I suppose there's always the bike induction system to use if your'e on a tight budget. There's no cheap way of installing Duratec in an Escort even if the engine's free, that's why most tend to stick with the Pinto engine even if it is long in the tooth.

    Re: Low cost duratec

The only cheap part of a duratec install is the engine. I am slowly building up my collection of parts for this. But i reckon best part of £4000 by the time you finish, but what you do get is with a decent engine and mapping best part of 190 bhp (i have heard) on a standard engine. If you blow it up then the engine will set you back £300- 500 which is the good bit after you have installed it.

    sump
    water rail
    exhaust manifold
    exhaust
    lowered rack cross member
    engine mounts
    lowered rack suspension arms
ecu and throttle bodies and inlet
    flywheel
    clutch
possible pedal box for hydraulic clutch (if using mazda)
suitable geatbox and bellhousing (depends on gearbox) type 9 or mazda mx5
radiator (use opposite sides to a pinto)
    oil relocator
    alternator kit
    and multiple sundries

this is not a definitive list but you realise this is not a budget job but the results i think will be far better than my pinto.

Have a look at the retroford web site for a good source of parts although sdb also do some parts as well.

Why an RX8 box and not a mk3 (NC) MX5 box? They bolt straight up.

    Exactly

I have both duratec engine and RX8 gearbox and do not think it would fit without a lot of work. The starter goes pretty much into the clutch hydraulic cylinder as it is on the top of the bellhousing. I don't think the work involved is worth the effort. When you can get a 6 speed that bolts up correctly (mazda mx5 6 speed). I have a mx5 5 speed ready to go on which is a lot smaller in size to the 6 speed.

I only was thinking of the rx8 box because it looked a bit smaller than the mx5 one but haven't seen it in person, it really does seem like I should try and get all the nc mx5 stuff as it is already in rwd format?

    Re: Low cost duratec

The NC 5 speed gearbox is amazing compared to the RX8, NC5 all the way.

The best bang for you buck would be standard internals apart from Cosworth valve springs and ARP flywheel bolts. This combo will be good for just under 200hp @ 7500rpm (Inlet dependent)

It's a shame no one makes an inlet plenum that will fit an escort like the Caterham one to keep the cost down, that plenum works so well.

    Re: Low cost duratec

Speaking about NC5, does the Duratec + NC5 gearbox fit straight into an MX5 NB ??

OK sounds like the nc mx5 box is the way to go, what about the ancillaries from a mx5 water pump, Alternator etc?

    Re: Low cost duratec

I'm doing this very same conversion on my mk2. I have just got hold of an MX5 NC 5sp box, you need to get a bigger tunnel to fit it and the gearbox is a little longer than a Type 9 I believe. I think most of the MX5 ancillaries will work with it, I am on the hunt for an MX5 sump to see if that could be a cheaper option than the expensive aftermarket stuff.

    Re: Low cost duratec

There was a guy on ebay selling off mx5 sumps recently, brand new. He had bought a few crate engines to convert into dry sumped race lumps. No idea if they will fit in an escort though. Just checked and they're not listed but he had 4 or 5, there might be a way to look through old ebay listings.

    Re: Low cost duratec

The 5 speed box is the N7 from the mk3 mx5. when you look at them the starter motor is in the 2 o'clock position when facing the bell housing which matches the duratec. Dont forget the mazda is a duratec engine also. I used mx5 and clutch flywheel and starter accordingly and also you will need a propshaft to match. I got mine made at Dave Mac props who is quite familiar with mazda props. The 5 speed and 6 speed have different prop ends. I managed to fit the 5 speed in an auto tunnel on a mk1 escort just the 6 speed is alot bigger and is apparently very similar to the RX8 box (but bolts up directly) and the RX8 carbon prop should slide in no issues.

Takes you choice each have their benefits.

Good resource! We'll be working on this MK2 project soon after we finished installing the suspension and kmc wheels on the pick-up truck this week and clear the garage. The initial plan is to this conversion and find a nice MX5 box.
