    Pinto to type 2 4speed

I have a 205 pinto that was fitted into a Capri, obviously had to change to an alloy sump to get it to fit to my mk1 escort. Had a type 2 4 speed and 2 piece prop sitting around, so decided to see if I could get that to work rather than shelling out for a type 9. I know I’m going to need to fab a gearbox mount as my car was originally an auto, and I think I have got the correct clutch from a cortina 1.6 (215mm 20 spline).
The starter motor that came with the engine doesn’t seem to want to fit, hitting the alloy sump.
Anyone know which one I need to use?
And can anyone foresee any other problems?

Is that an aftermarket alloy sump and what diameter's the body of the starter motor body? You need the shorter and slightly smaller diameter starter motor with possibly the lip that sticks out grinding off.

It’s a burton one, which strangely doesn’t have a threaded hole for a sump plug either.
The main body is 64mm diameter, about 210mm full length and 155mm end of main body to mounting face.
What is the smaller starter from?

I have just measured a starter motor I have and it's similar dimentions to yours, I have another one but won't be able to measure that one until late tomorrow. If you need a smaller diameter bodied starter then a geared one's the answer but be prepared to spend big money. If it the lip that's stopping it fitting then if it is it needs to be removed.

What do you mean by it doesn't have a threaded hole for the sump plug?

    Thanks for the helps guys.
Will try grinding the lip off, as it seems to be all that stopping it. Just wasn’t sure if it was just because it was the wrong starter or the lip.

I mean there is no way to drain the sump, except by taking it off. Guessing I’ll need to drill and thread my own hole.

Re: Pinto to type 2 4speed

I would remove a bit at a time with the lip and keep trying until the starter fits, no need removing more than's needed.

Have you looked on the back of the big wing to see if the sump drain's there? it seems strange to me that it comes without the facility to drain the engine oil.

Will look again, hoping I just mistook it for a gearbox bolt thread when I had a quick glance. Now that the gearbox is on I’m sure it will stand out.

I’m sure it will be there, haven’t looked particularly hard for it, just been rushing trying to get the engine and box in place.

Strangely enough I just checked the pictures of the Burton's RS sumps and there doesn't seem to be a pre drilled / tapped sump plug hole - anywhere! They sell the M12x22mm sump bolts but don't give a hole to fit them - Bizarre!

I’m going to make a point of thoroughly checking later as I does seem strange.

There was one, at the back of the sump, just looks like it’s a gearbox bolt hole in the pictures.

The only problem that I can see is that your gearbox won't last very long with a pinto - Ford didn't use the Type 2 gearbox with pintos for a reason.

Re: Pinto to type 2 4speed

I was thinking that, but it just needs to hold out long enough for me to either put a gear kit in it, or until I get a type 9.

Dropped the starter motor, so have a chance to get a new one.
Anyone know for definite what starter will work with the type 2 gearbox and a pinto?
