RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Does anyone have a relatively simple fix for my stripped out crossmember threads.
I removed the bolts so i can make up some extension bolts to make the engine go back in easeyer ,Ie drop crossmember a few inches.
Unfortunately very rusty bolts stripped out captive nuts. (3/8 unf) ?
dont realy want to drill large holes in chassis to repair, would re tapping m12 be ok or have the powers of turbosport any other ideas.
    cheers all.

Unless you want to do this

There aint much that can be done. I had to open the chassis rail on my rs to refit new captive nuts. But on my 1.3 i fitted the through chassis nut kit. So it has a spacer through the chassis and a long bolt and nut.

As above you have two options; cut open the chassis leg or drill through and nut and bot through using anti-crush tubes.

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

On my road car someone in the past
Had drilled through and just fitted a long bolt. As this was the only one done I made the choice to open it up and fit the captive nuts back in.
But the track escort was going to get worked hard so it's got group 4 spec through chassis.

Unless you're building a rally car, none. Even then I wouldn't fit one!

If you don't want to drill straight through, try helicoiling the 3/8 unf thread. I'm sure mine had been helicoiled from new.

I just tapped mine out with a metric thread, the thread was knackered but the captive nut was still solid. I think it was M10 or M12.

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Hi mates, watching at this thread, an oddity came up to my mind, and I would like to have your expert advices. In order to fit a MK2 with a bullet 2000E or a type 9 gearboxes and avoid the need to work on the gearbox tunnel , is it possible to place some spacers to lower both, the engine and gearbox crossmembers and thus obtain the necessary space ? Am I out of my mind, or this job can be done.

Apologies for my kind of odd query and look forward to hear your very kind advices.

    Cheers,

    Eduardo

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Trouble is both type 9 and 2000e gearboxes have the gearlever about 2 inches further back, so no amount of lowering is going to help!

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Hi exboyracer, thank's a lot for your kind reply. Yes, I know about that situation, and that's not a problem, and also is very easy to solve. I'm talking about the front of the gearboxes, where the bellhousing is situated, in there you have to cut off a piece of the tunnel and weld a "gearbox tunnel" more or less like Rally Design part nmbr. RD 1963. I was trying to avoid cutting and welding in that part of the tunnel, especialy considering structural reasons. That's where my question was oriented to. Hope my question is now more clear.

    Cheers,

    Eduardo

Box will fit ok. The top of the tunnel is not the problem. Its the width thats too narrow. One solition is to jack the tunnel side out to get the box to fit.
The RS escorts were fitted with spacer blocks to the gearbox mount to drop the box so it didn't hit the tunnel top.
Also move the lever hole back about 1 1/2"

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Hi robrs2, also thank you a lot for your very kind reply. Now I have everything clear. My ignorance about this matter is because in my country we dont't have RS2000s or MK2 Mexicos, only 1300 MK1s and 1600 MK2s. Now I know how to proceed.

Again thanks a lot to you and also exboyracer.

    Cheers,

    Eduardo

You also need the RS2000 alloy bell housing to make the gearbox fit more straight forward.

Re: RS 2000 mk 2 crossmember bolts stripped on removal and helicoil pulled out

Hi merp0, thanks a lot for your kind mail too. Yes, I do have the alloy bell housings for both, the T9 and and 2000E gearboxes, so the gearboxes will fit straight forward.

    Cheers,

    Eduardo
