    Bellhousings for rs2000 gearbox

Is there any differences between the cast bellhousing and the alloy bellhousings that are available for the rs2000 type e gearbox? I know there is a big weight saving, but is there a size difference, do they take different starter motor, clutch forks etc.

Rs2000 are considerably smaller and do have different clutch forks.

I suspect started are the same but don’t hold me to that

Just to add to that, you can intsall a type 9 box in a standard tunnel with an Rs bellhousing (done it). With a cast one you will need to massage the tunnel with a hammer. Never done that but thats what i am told.

I have an rs2000 4 speed, and am fitting to a mk1. Will probably just go down the alloy bellhousing route, but the cast ones are so much cheaper!
Do they make the boxes sit any differently in the car?

starter position is a little different - possibly you need alloy bh with alloy sump due to this but never tried a cast housing with ally sump.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and use the correct RS alloy bellhousing, that's the one you'll stand the best chance of fitting into your tunnel with the minimum of modifications. The cast steel bellhousing is rather more bulky as it was designed for the larger transmission tunnels of the Cortina and Granada and sports a different clutch arm to the RS one.

The only experience I have had are with genuine Ford bellhousings and NOT the reproduction ones. Beware when buying a second hand bellhousing that the threads aren't either stripped or been helicoiled. The last one I bought I had an engineer Timesert every thread as some Monkey had stripped most of them.

Ok, good advice. Will stick with the alloy bellhousing to avoid any further headaches.

    Re: Bellhousings for rs2000 gearbox

Hope it's ok to hijack this post as my issue is related, just took the gearbox out my south African mk1 escort with the intention of fitting an alloy bellhousing. Now I have it out it would appear that the steel bellhousing is the same dimensions as the alloy one but also that my gearbox is a 2.8 v6 one as it has the 3 bolts on the front of the casing, and as such the alloy bellhousing will need modified in order to fit. I would like opinions on if it is safe to modify the bellhousing and if you think it's worth it for the weight saving or should I stick the steel one back in. Cheers

i wouldnt worry about weght unless your competing or changing box regularly get some pics up - 2.8 box has longer shaft so either b/h is different or shaft and splines have been cut back

You could get a machine shop to modify the alloy bellhousing fo fit to your gearbox but bear in mind you'll need the corresponding clutch fork for the alloy one. If I were you I would continue to use the cast one and keep the alloy one in stock for a future project if you don't need the cash.

Looking at the pictures - if you tried machining the RS bell, I think you may break through the bottom surface to accommodate that plate as it sits between and below the lower mounting bolt holes - not the end of the world just a PITA
