    Alternator switched live

The alternator that came with my current pinto engine has got the usual the three spade block connector setup (picture attached)
however I used to have a different setup, which someone else fitted, and the wiring is different. So have ordered the block connector and thought I better check my wiring first.
I have only one charging wire, which goes to the starter so that will go to either of the larger spades, a smaller blue wire that I presume goes to the dash and therefore goes on the small spade within the block.
but I also seem to have a switched live that comes from the positive on the coil? Do I need this? If so where does it go?
do I need some sort of earth wire for the alternator?
    thanks

    Alternator switched live

Earth will be through the body and the adjuster bracket to block. If you have a bushed mount

    Ok thanks, thought as much.
What do you think the other wire is for then?

    Re: Alternator switched live

Sounds like your old alternator used a switched live to overcome the "self-exciting" mechanism in most alternators, which means they need to get "up to speed" before the windings become fully active. Just forget about the switched live, and any Lucas compatible alternator will work OK.
