four door mk2 road rally project

heres my mk2 1300gl four door,i bought it from mull last october i got the train up from northwich to oban and drove it back-had no issues apart from it running hot above 60 so took it steady.first mod was some gen rs2000 wheels and some 175/70/13 yokohama tyres so its legal for historic road rallies, also bought a steering wheel boss from squires so i could fit my 3 spoke steering wheel.

Re: four door mk2 road rally project

next job was to sort out front brakes and struts so got some 2nd hand group1 bilsteins, then needed some steering arms and a new roller bearing top, bought some new 175 std height springs from squires along with some fancy nas bolts for the steering arms.Bought some reconditioned spaced m16 calipers from gs escorts and some rs hubs and new vented discs from squires.managed to get a new track control arm off ebay for 3 quid local and got another from a factors for 28.fitting struts meant opening inner wings out and re drilling the inner wing.ebay track control arm needed the inner bush drilling out as was too small.bought some new gen ford rs2000 track rod ends, one side came off like new the other needed a slot with the grinder.got the struts bolted on came to put the new calipers on-two problems!needed a spacer to centralise the caliper and the old bolts wouldnt fit the bilsteins as they are a 7/16 thread.ordered a kit off ebay with the spacer washers and bolts came to fit them today and the bolts were very tight but i carried on and ended up snapping one off in the strut!so took hub off the drilled the bolt out went to machine mart bought a tap and die set ran it down the threads and then ran the die down the new bolts which were obviously not right!anyway got it all bolted up and bled brakes and took it around the block but need brakes bleeding again but drives loads better

Re: four door mk2 road rally project

fitted some rear bilsteins nice and firm now at the back, bought a fresh 1700 crossflow for 500 quid has been lightened and balanced and has a 270 cam in so no screamer but should be ideal down the lanes.got myself a four branch and a brand new ashley sytem from squires along with a twin choke and manifold.got it running sounds crisp but crank is hitting sump so will be dropping front crossmember etc to drop it.got some quarter bumpers off a mate for 50quid some spotlight brackets(new from gs escorts) and best bargain is some super oscars for 32quid off ebay and they are mint.will pop some pics up soon

Re: four door mk2 road rally project

Went and got some m10x1.5x40 cap head bolts so I could quick release the gearbox. Had to relieve the box slightly as the bolts go in from behind use a grinder, stone and drill bits so they would sit flush and go in straight

Fair play your tunnel went much better than mine I couldn't mate mine up to the original tunnel because it had been butchered before so i will have to fab that piece up. And the welding on mine isn't too clever.
