    Widest English? Not Narrow....

I am building a lightweight Hillclimb car and I thinking of using English as the basis of the axle.

i can find lots of threads for narrowing the axle but none about how wide they can be built?

i guess adding the semi floating kit will make a difference but is there any info about how much wider it will end up at?

My car is arched with 8” slicks.

    cheers

cant really help, except that you cant really build them wider without using longer half shafts.

someone may correct me on this but i think the widest engine axles would be capri, either a 1300 mk3 or 4 cyl mk1

That is an English Axle, but he has described it as an Atlas in his description.

Where ? Doesn't mention Atlas anywhere? Hope it has the half shafts with it as I don't imagine suitable shafts will be common these days?

I must've misread it. I could've sworn he said it was an Atlas when I read the full description.

52” Ford Capri Axle with half shafts, back plates and brake rod.

And you can't have read it properly either as it Clearly says "Axle With Halftshafts"

Why do you want to go wider? Could you not just play with wheel offsets and spacers? Would be tricky getting wider shafts, a fully floating hub kits widens by about 10mm

The wider English halfshafts do start losing their strength the longer they are, probably not as important if you have a very lightweight car with a lowish torque engine. As earlier mentioned you are better doing it on the wheel offset.

    Ok, all good info.

Looks like i will get a casing and build one up and then sort the wheels to give my the extra width via off set.

nothing wrong with a 52 inch English axle and better job than spacers .

Except they’re mega rare, shafts are hard to come by etc, you can easily make up that width with wheel offset and hubcentric spacers

    https://www.premiermotorsportdevelop...axle-258-c.asp

Stick to standard width and run 10" rears with wider slick, why bother with wider axle, more weight.

Plenty of options for wider stronger axles. If you want to go wider, go for a toyota pickup axle. Circa 1980. I can't remember the model number.
