    Duratec Timing - Raceline Cams

    Hi,

I've recently bought a Duratec from an MX5 rally car and I'm working through it to fit into my Escort
One job is to fit a dry sump so I've removed the MX5 sump, crank pulley, front cover and std oil pump

But I'm slightly confused how to get the crank pulley back in the right place!
I marked everything when I took apart but the cranks sprocket / cams might have moved when I loosened the oil pump sprocket
Everything on the engine is done up "too" tight, the crank pulley bolt needed a 6ft breaker bar to loosen it

It is fitted with Raceline 250 cams (marked KC RLD250 and the inlet has 0910, haven't checked the exhaust), and it's a VVT head if that makes any difference
The cam pulleys have not been disturbed, but if I turn the engine over, the timing slots in back of the cams never line up, although they come close
(I have the usual Duratec timing kit)

    Inlet

    Exhaust

Not the best pictures but hopefully it shows both slots at a slight angle
Would this have been done on purpose to time the cams correctly?
And if so, do I need to know the lift at TDC to fit the crank pulley in the correct position?

I've sent a message to Raceline but no response so far

    Thanks
    Gavin

    no vernier pulleys then?

to set the crank correctly all you need is the locking pin for the crank, as to the cams, it looks to me like you are 180 degrees out to fit them using the standard locking plate

Are No 1 and 4 pistons @ TDC with your cams in the position that are in the photos and does the crankshaft have a keyway or friction washer? Have the cam wheel location bolts been slacked to time in the cams or are they verneir? If they are non std cams then to get the final timing correct you are going to need the timing figures off the manufacturer. Locking bars on the cams are only suitable for roughly setting to std marks, once your performance cams are timed correctly the bar might no longer slot into the grooves.

A word of WARNING, always keep a close eye on valve to piston contact before, during and after setting your timing. Double and treble check if in any doubt!

    Hi,

It's all friction washers, and the engine was running with the cams how they are (so I've been told), so it's just a case of working out where the cams need to be when the crank is at TDC
I put the crank pulley back on and turned the engine over very very slowly and nothing touches
At most I would say the cams moved 10 degrees, but they might not have moved at all !

The picture is the closest I could get the cam slots to be level

    Thanks

Thats i what my thoughts were as well. What i did notice timing my standard cams up is the inlet never lined up easily as i think on another cyclinder it was on a lobe so i had to move it to get the bar in it didn't sit naturally straight (does that sound right). Or have i made an error somewhere

We did a cambelt on an ST170 a few months ago before we put it into a Sierra and no, I wouldn't say the cams line up easily either, again only standard cams though.
