    cb750 cafe racer build

this is my cafe racer project; i have bought two cb750's from the same bloke one is a good bike in pieces and the other is a rusty mess thats been sat in the garden for years. the previous owner stripped the 1978 k7 down around five years ago to completely restore it but never got round to putting it back together. everything was there all carefully stored in boxes waiting to be put back together. and the other bike is i think a 1972 k2 without a engine that was a parts bike. ive stripped the parts bike down to the frame and stacked all the parts up in boxes as this will probably be a long term project. i love the styling of cafe racers so it will be going in this direction eventually. hears a few pics:

    Re: cb750 cafe racer build

ive made a start. i started sorting out all the engine parts and trying to decide the bits that im going to keep and what to sell on or bin. theres a lot of stuff to sort out. the front shocks look good as do the back dampers the tank is spot on, front wheel is amazingly good but the rear wheel spokes are rusty on both bikes.

    Re: cb750 cafe racer build

Looks good should turn out real nice when it's done.

What do you think of this. It's a CB400/4 it was owned by a guy called John Palmer, I think he lived Watford or Bushey sort of way, back in about 1984 ish. He worked with my Brother Richard, they were both apprentices at Kodak in Harrow Wealdstone. There's even a 4 door mk1 in the background of one of the pics.
Sorry if the pictures aren't actually that good firstly there nearly thirty years old and secondly I had to doctor them with some photo software because they were really dark when I scanned them.

gb: that bike is begging to be restored pull your finger out man!
graham: yes the plan is to just restore and rebuild the engine at this point. but plans often do change.

few pics of some small progress:

fitted light and indicators but there a bit big so will have a think whether to use them or not
rear swing arm was rusted solid so took some time and heat to remove clean grease and refit

rally rob: that looks good but im not a big fan of fairings[/QUOTE]

Fair enough. I think it looks lovely.

Me Brother had a Z650 at the same time as this, the one with the alloys, front an rear discs. He had a little bikini fairing on that, with a pair of Rickman Ace bars an a bit of a sports seat. Lovely... Lol. Most strange that it had an electric start and a kick start, it would never start on the electric start on cold mornings, kick it once an it would go though, suppose the starter wasn't quite upto the job really.

The fairing on the 400/4 reminds me of the Mad Max Bikes, the old Z900's an Z1R's, things like that.

An I love the fact that you've obviously got that bike inside the house, thats a pool table with a sheet of ply over it's sitting on isn't it?

    Re: cb750 cafe racer build

its all in a my extension pool room/gym/studio/kids bike storage room/darts room/dump. but will be just about perfect to use for the rebuild as i didnt really us it for anything and its nice to have a area that can be left alone without having to pack anything up when i finish work for the day. i have a shed with workbench for metal fabrication and a small garage that always comes in handy for storage and workspace.

    Re: cb750 cafe racer build

then i realised i had a spare knackered petrol tank that was rotten on the bottom.
so i did this with it,

it still needs a lot of work and about 3 inches taken out of the middle then it should fit a treat!
im thinking about making a oil tank out of this alloy roller i got, but dont know yet?

Oh i do love a cafe racer. Liking the red one a lot, old looking bike with loads of modern bits, perfect.
Shame about the lack of pics but looking forward to see how this turns out.

    Re: cb750 cafe racer build

im still working on this bike from time to time, at the moment cleaning all the engine components and casings. ive got all new bearings, honed rods and new gudgin pins and retaining clips, new clutch lifter plate that was broke. decoked the pistons and have a gasket set. valves are back in the cylinder head and im test fitting the lot to check all is good and how the hell this all goes back together? ive bought a manual and it seems fine so far! the crank has been tested to check all is good. so just waiting on some sealing compound to build up the bottom end.

Looks good, I've been running a 72 CR750 at CRMC this year, surprisingly good bike, hasn't missed a beat, struggled for decent parts though, took 7 engines to build the one in the bike!

    Nice one mate,

Clip-onīs. You need clip-onīs. That handle bar is not doing any justice for that build. I would also consider retro look smaller dials. Just my aspect to the build. Looking good anyways.

I ride a ZX14 crotch rocket, but these care racers are beautiful bikes. Will some day do one for me too.

    Cheers from Finland
