Type 9 Gearbox mount on mk2 escort

my mate fitted my type 9 a while back after i rebuilt the engine. I tried driving car down drive and had grinding noises from box and blue smoke from bad piston rings. Car was put away and i recently rebuilt the engine which is sweet. I left the box in situ to avoid messing with it. Once rebuilt i was getting grinding noises coming from box...... the old auto box mount was used on the type 9 as it was supposed to fit. Turns out the auto mount didn't line up 100% so he has kind of forced it to fit . And i reckon that this has knocked everything out of line....1 inch box section was used to space it. Has anyone else done this conversion and have you run into any problems with the mount and if so how did you solve the problem

Hi, is the tunnel an auto tunnel with original mounting points ?
If so and as your type9 is on the auto support bracket I would suggest, support the gearbox,( a trolly jack under it or remove the gear stick and put a loop of rope around the box bring it through the gearstick hole and hang it off a length of steel. This may be a bit more stable if your working alone ). Once supported release the support bracket from the mounts get your engine back in and the box mated up to it.
Get the engine settled down on its mounts in the cross member, this will require them being taped down using a block of wood against the mount and a hammer to tap them down. Get the engine level in the mounts (side to side). Now adjust your gearbox up or down to where you want it. The drive train should sit at 4* (front to back) (think it’s 3.8* to be exact but good luck measuring that) to the front chassis rails in the engine bay. That’s ideal, and I don’t think many people worry about it and it doesn’t cause problems if it’s out a bit. The Mk1 eyeball is a good gauge.
Once this is all where you want it, look at the position of your gearbox support to the mounts, and make something up to suit. You may find that not only do you need a spacer but the bolt holes don’t line up, the bracket being forward or aft of the mounts. If so just make your spacers to suit, eg they may come forward from the bracket with extra holes to bolt into the mounts. You probably don’t want the gear box support under a lot of tension to get it to line up to the mounts, it won’t do the rubber any good, and it will restrict the movement the support is designed to give. Also it could be your drive train is forced into a line that is causing the UJ on the drive shaft to grind. Also whilst your there check the drive shaft UJs are in good order and lubricated.
Hope that helps. Let us know
