    Question Scalextric???

Been promising to get my old scalextric out for my boy for ages, finally got it out of the attic for him today.
It hasnt seen the light of day in nearly 20yrs and the metal bits on the track have discoloured/coroded, this causes bad contacts with the cars.
Ive tried cleaning them up with wire wool, but is there a better way like coke or vinegar or something similar?

I have no idea, however, as I'm sure you know, Scalextric is really collectable so there must be a good hobby based forum out there and no doubt someone will be able to point you in the right direction

I put new brush sets in afew of the cars but some bits on the track still seem abit stop start. Also bought a brand new mk1 escort for it but its too low and bellys out as it goes over any joins in the track

    Re: Scalextric???

I once bought a mini metro set from a car boot for a fiver and the track was alittle corroded (well it was not shiny) the car did'nt make a good contact and would stop constantly. I tried to clean the track with autosol but it was no good, I think the rails are chrome plated and when there corroded its only fit for the bin.

You can by a abrasive block for cleaning the track off e bay they are cheap. Does job fine and cleans train track too .Track not chrome plated just polished clean. Bit of elbow grease and should be fine.

    Re: Scalextric???

You can probably just get a decent second hand set off Ebay for a few quid. I had about 100ft of track and sold it all to a mate for £40 with a load of cars. I think that's right about the track when it gets corroded. It's knackered.

Check the connections between the different sections of track. Also if you have a lot of track then think about some power booster wires (think that's what they're called) which clip into the track near your power supply and at the other end they clip into the track a long way from the power supply to even out the power around the track. Suspect you must be able to find these on ebay

    Re: Scalextric???

Got tons of very tarnished track myself, the abrasive blocks etc worked for about 5 mins then gave up and took forever. So instead I attached a 120grit dremel drum to my drill then finished it off with a 400-600grit. Worked a treat!
