Hello. New here and its time to get the Escort sorted.

    Hello.

Been thinking about which forum to join for ages, as I don't do FB etc, and decided you are the people I'd like to become a burden to .

    The story goes....

Wanted a Mk1 Escort since I was 3. At age 15 I managed to get one from a scrap yard for £150. In 1993!

    And the bond was formed.

Got her finished and on the road in 1996 (scrapped about 5 escorts to make this one good one, and that hurts now seeing the prices of them) she got hit in 1999, repaired/restored and back on the road in 2000 with bubble arches, abused her till around 2006 and then the whole family thing happened and she's sat around since then with just an occasional start up.

Now it's time to have her restored again, but this time I want to pay someone else for the bodywork and welding as the quality of my own work just doesn't cut it in the 21st century.

Been shocked at the quotes I've had, seems £200 resprays and £2000 restorations are a thing of history with quotes now coming in at 10x that number! Had Andy from Andy's Auto body restorations in Rochester (Kent) come look at the car yesterday for some quotes, but again I suspect prices will be eye watering.

The other problem I'm having is my memory used to be like a sponge, I knew the size of every nut, bolt, washer, what parts fitted which components, even my cam durations and cam timing, it was all in my head and nothing written down, but now I've forgotten even basic stuff and that's where I'll be hoping for help.

    Cheers.

Hello. New here and its time to get the Escort sorted.

Currently in diamond white but seriously considering going back to the original Ermine white on the restoration.

Appreciate arches aren't the accepted South London look but I like arches.

Thanks mate, but not so much when you look a bit closer at the finish unfortunately.

On 67k when I bought her. She's generally untouched, straight and solid, no rust or anything.

Had a massive oil leak from the factory which took 2 days to scrape off, underneath was like new afterwards. I pumped all my oil changes into the chassis rails back then!

But my 1990's bodges aren't acceptable anymore!

Still running on leaded as well because I was told it couldn't be converted due to clearances between valves, but Vulcans reckon they could give it a try with some risks attached.

How - no one supplies leaded fuel apart from drag race fuel which is expensive and also not for road use? And Vulcan response is odd as the old exhaust seats need to be machined out and even if there was an overlap of the seats that valves aren't that close unless you have monster valves in there - i'm assuming a Pinto engine? Ford managed it ok with Sierra heads? Good looking car BTW!

I use Millers VSP. I bought many crates of the stuff back when it was under £2 a bottle.

It's an experimental head built by Roland Hayes in the late 90's.

No idea what cams people use now but this has a pre-production HT1 and Citreon DS inlet valves. A long time since I last had the head off but I do remember inlets and exhausts looked like they were touching at first glance. Took it to Burtons and they said it couldn't be converted, but that was a long time ago.

I wouldnt worry about running it on unleaded, the seats work harden over time.

    Cheers mate.

Going by what I was told on Monday I need to budget £5 - £6k for a pristine paint job inside and out and underneath. Don't know how accurate that really is and I assume it includes all prep work and fettling etc.

As with any motor you've owned for 27 years, there's a story behind most parts on the car.

Revolution wheels went out of business, don't really know the full story. Someone gave me a phone number of a guy who'd got hold of their presses. Only remember it was a Catford area number. He asked what sizes and offsets etc I wanted, then I sent him £380 and that was the last I heard.

3 Months later this set of 15x8" 5 spokes turned up at my door.... I was proper chuffed.

Nice looking mk1, love the arches, I wouldn’t bother with hardened valve seats

Man, that's a very neat looking Mk1! Definitely worth bringing her back to the glory.

Couldn't fix it so just reposted from a PC!

    Works fine on other forums.
