A friend of mine has a bmw 520 (2.2L I Tthink) which has developed a strange engine problem. Initially the hydraulic tappets would start making noise intermittently then would work perfect again for a while. When the car was taken to the garage they found what was described as flakes of something in the oil filter which were blocking it and causing the oil pressure to drop. After replacing the oil filter and flusing the engine the tappety sound went away only to return again some time later. The garage is now saying that the engine may need to be replaced.
My thoughts on this is that the flakes are carbon which are getting into the oil. The engine burns a small amount of oil and has only done about 120 thousand kilometers.
Is this something that anyone else has seen in a BMW
Thanks
Tom
