Not really sure what they're oil pumps are like but they have a pretty poor reputation on here and they're customer service experiance is very poor too.

So for those reason alone I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

I know it can be done but I've never managed to get the spring cap out of one.
I actully just ended up damaging the case itself.

Re: best new pinto oil pump

I've done it to mine, and it works fine. I only have the RS cluster so I do not know how much it is in psi/bar but is over half when hot. On idle it is down but rises quick. Drill a small hole in the cap, screw in a woodscrew, pull out the cap an carefully tap the cap stright again if needed. Weld it on the outside. Shim the spring and refit the cap. I did this because I like the idea of not just bying things off the shelf an bolt it to something, coming up with ideas an making it work is good even if it is not to everyones standard.

Re: best new pinto oil pump

I found I couldn't drill the cap as it was too hard, mind you that was 30yrs ago.
I haven't tried it again recently with 30yrs more life experience.

Lol, I'm sure you will make it this time. Years add patience and the drillbits is probably better too.

Re: best new pinto oil pump

Lol. But funnily enough I don't need one now.
I've got a high pressure pump that's done probably no more than 1500 miles and a high pressure high capacity pump that’s
done even less than that. And somewhere lurking in my garage I've got a cossie pump with pick up pipe and under piston spray pipes too.
Admittedly the Cossie pump is unknown, so I might try moding that one.

I guess the only available HP/HC pumps are from Burton and Kent nowadays. Most probably they got them made at the same place. Lately, they seem to be both OK in rally engines but I can not judge for long mileage.

Re: best new pinto oil pump

Correct Graham, most new pumps are rubbish, worn out before them leave my dyno

I'm using cast iron Melling M-86B pumps. They are standard size but flow enough oil to keep high oil reading with hot engines at lower RPM's. You do need to tap the plug over the spring to the end (it will not move further). This way you got round 4,5 - 4,8 bar of oil pressure. Being cast iron, they don't loose much pressure hot. Same in Beetle engines.

    Dear Dirk,
Where can I purchase the M-86B pump ? I did once buy a Melling pump but it was probably for a 2.3 Pinto so I could not use it naturally.

Thank you very much Dirk. The one problem is PayPal does not work in Turkey I will get my cousin in the US to purchase and send it to me. I have looked on eBay and found them. Some seems NOS stock and some seems new production.

Hi, I’ve done approx 8 rallies and maybe 2-300 road miles on newly built pinto using Burton high pressure and capacity pump with no issues yet.

thats good, but oil pump life should be 100,000 + miles so you cant really say if its any good or not yet

I was thinking exactly the same thing, got to be a good 100k-plus...

I'm hoping that my little selection of oil pumps are the quality items of 30yrs ago as that's how old they both are, but both with probably less than 500 miles on them. Apart from my cossie pump which is of unknown mileage to me.

Yea, fully appreciate that was just sharing that I haven’t had an instant failure. Also to be fair, I’m not sure my engine will ever get to 100,000 miles without at least one fairly significant rebuild including a pump replacement which I guess will be true of quite a few competition engines.

    Thanks, Lewis

Re: best new pinto oil pump

I've dismantled Burton pumps after a good dyno session and pumps did not look very "new" anymore. No idea how long it takes before they fail but I don't want an oil pump to fail at all.

Re: best new pinto oil pump

I don't know what oil pumps KENT is currently selling. In my very early days of Pinto tuning they had, just as Burton, very good quality pumps.

I can only judge about the Burton pumps currently sold. They are not what it should be. The alloy always have wear lines when little used. I feel the alloy is not correct quality to be used as a kind of bearing / support. The gears also looks like they had a hard live after very low use.

I've not bought KENT pumps anymore, someone told me they are currently the same but if not, you may have chance with KENT.

The Melling pumps are very good (and affordable), keep the clearance when hot much better because they are made out of cast iron. They also work very well in Beetle engines.

Most likely Kent, Burton and others in the UK all come out of the same factory in China.

they had quite a few bits made in turkey, but when i pressed them on something, whilst they wouldnt tell me the source they did say they had had issues so had gone back to a uk supplier, sadly it doesnt actually mean the pumps are any good though.................

Re: best new pinto oil pump

The main problem is, we as a customer and end user don't have the possibilities to test all this stuff like oil pumps etc.. the hard way. We need good oil pumps and have to relay on the supplier. Once a supplier start selling low quality, you can no longer trust it. Even if he does supply good pumps right now.

Oil pumps are just like conrods, pistons, ... parts we don't want to let us down.
