If you are using a points type ignition or a points-replacement electronic ignition (like Ignitor I) use 0.7 - 0.8 mm.
If you are using a good electronic ignition (like Lumenition Opto) use 1.0 - 1.1 mm.

Invest in a proper electronic ignition, you won't regret it.

Don't mean to hijack Murrays tread, but which do you recommend for Pinto on carb(s), Miniliteman?

For any high performance engine I would recommend the Lumenition Performance Ignition System.
It is a proved reliable, robust system. And as it uses an opto-sensor it is very much less prone to interference.
