Roller Bearing Top Mount fitting question

I must be doing something daft here seeing as nobody has asked this question before!

Fitting RBTM's and whichever way I fit the collars they don't look right.

    These are the collars:

Fitted this way round with the long one at the bottom:

View from the top once fitted:

But the way they sit against the spring cap just doesn't look right at all, so have I done something wrong or am I missing something, or is this how they're supposed to fit?

    Thanks for any info.

Not sure what inserts you have, and never seen spacers like that before, but the spring cap should be touching the bottom of the RBTM

    Thanks Gavin.

These are the only spacers/sleeves I could find to allow a 1/2" piston rod through a RBTM, from Rally Design. Don't think anyone else does them for that specific setup.

    Most rods are 5/8".

Inserts are Bilstein. Couldn't find any to fit both the strut and the original top mount with 1/2" hole when I got them, so had to buy the inserts with the D shaped rods and lathe them to 1/2" to go through the top mounts.

I emailed them asking and this was their reply:

"If you are running the car low then put the long sleeve on top under the nut. If you are running the car high then put the long sleeve under the mount."

I still don't like the way they sit so will swap them round and put the small one at the bottom where it has a bigger surface area in contact with the spring cap and I'll add a conical washer as well to spread the load better.

If I remember right I only had one insert from the top and the spring cap did meet the roll top. The only issue was the nut was all the way and I still had some play, so I was told to pack the underneath with a thick washer.

Re: Roller Bearing Top Mount fitting question

Hello, I tried to fit the roller bearing top mount, with bilstein inserts, all from gp4 fab, but I have the longer threaded 5/8 nut which is around 5mm longer than the bearing, meaning there is 5mm of play, because it goes to touch the shorter spacer underneath.

I doubt it's normal to have that much play, but being everything from the same company, i thought it would have been a fit and forget...

Here you can see the bronze nut coming out of the bearing and giving that much play.

Re: Roller Bearing Top Mount fitting question

    Hi,
I have recently done just this thing.
My bushes (inserts) actually went inside the bearing in the top mount to pack-out the difference between the two parts.
In other words spindle and bearing are different sizes, the insert takes up the gap.

Wondering If my ones are right now.

Yeah on some strut tops you have an insert which packs out the nut and takes up the difference in thread size and bearing hole.

Re: Roller Bearing Top Mount fitting question

It will be enough to cut down the 5/8 nut (I will use a washer/spacer instead, to avoid risk of ruining the thread), I was wondering more on how something that came in the same box, from the same manufacturer, doesn't fit togheter, but need working on it.

I thought I was missing something.

Glad your on top of it now.
Just make sure you have enough thread for the top nut.

From my experiences things these days whoever or wherever you get them need fettling to fit.

What ever happened to British Standard?
