    Coolant Sensor Options

    Hi Guys,

I am fitting a coolant rail to my Zetec Black Top engine install. I am running the original Ford Black Top ECU, fuel injection system, inlet manifold etc.

What threaded coolant sensors are available that would work with the Ford ECU etc?

I would say you need the one the engine came with. Many aftermarket ecu's work with a bosch blue one 12mm x 1.5 thread if that helps

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

Hi ya, the engine hasn't got one as its a build from scratch. That's why I am struggling a little to find what is the correct one and what can be used etc.

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

Surely if you know what car the engine/ecu came from, just order one for that ?

Although an awful lot of such sensors have a fairly standard resistance range as per the Bosch NTC sensors that are readily available like the little blue one mentioned ( which oddly lists various fitments, and carries same part number as the Bosch Motorsport NTC sensor )

    Hi ya,

Bit of a miss mash lol. Silver top engine using black top ecu, intake, injection etc. The seems to be three sensors for the ecu mentioned but not 100 % confirmed. The normal 3/8 x 18 NPT one, the later push in one but also a M10 one, and not the gauge one. When using water rails, not seen anyone using any ecu sensor at all so far.

Surely you know what year of car/engine the ecu is from ? That's all that matters for the choice.

It has a barcode sticker on it and. " LAAN" "XS7F-12A650-RB" "E4TYC9CH2S8B" from some web searches, sounds like the earl Zetec, Silvertop and blacktop sensors are electricaly the same?

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

pretty much all temperature sensors are the same.

They're all just a variable resistor really ( although different makes, may use different scalings )

This ad is your part number, says 96-2000 Mondeo 2.0

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-COUG...0AAOSw8gVX937v

This ad says temp sensor for that car.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COOLANT-T...-/142544065122

    Seems simple enough ?

More than likely they all read in a similar range anyway....and it will be fairly obvious when you get it powered up and view live data via OBD to see how it is reading.

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

Is the sensor for the ecu or the gauges? That's the struggle part. Most seem to lost the 3/8 size but no water rail has that size and can not find any adaptors to fit it. Was hoping there was a sensor that had a more common thread

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

    What struggle ?

What sensor do you want, for the ecu or for a gauge ? You haven't mentioned what gauges you're using. You'd need to find a sensor suitable for them whatever they are.

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

Sorry I ment the sensor for the ecu. The gauges are a separate sensor. The blacktop and Silverton have two sensors, one for ecu, one for gauges, the link looks like the one for the gauges. The one for the ecu is bigger with a grey connector like this one.

But some say there is other threads like this one, same grey connector

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

The first one you list, nowhere on it does it specify it is for your application.

The second will probably work ok.

And as the third link shows, the one for the temp gauge is a single wire which is typical.

They're less than a tenner...not a big deal. Choose whichever thread and connector you think is easiest for you tou work with

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

The first was just a typical style. Any search on euro car parts, GSF etc show the larger size only, but can not find any water rail that uses that size thread. Third lik shows two sensors, both two wire and showing they come in large thread and smaller thread. Found this thread size but without any resistance values, I can not check, just wondering if anyone has used them before on a black top.

    Re: Coolant Sensor Options

This suits All Mondeo years (+ lots of other models) so will work with silver & blacktops . . . . . and its cheap! A Steve has said the resistances vary very little between makes so as you've got nothing to go by, it could be a couple of degrees wrong - it won't be 10's of degrees wrong so of little consequence!

your over thinking it, contact water rail maker and ask what sensor you need for it on a 2.0 zetec ...............

Lol thanks guys, being an engineer, we like to be spot on. Getting a rail made with M10x1.5 thread. That's will fit most and Burton have one that's 1/8NPT and lots of adaptors for M10x1.5 to 1/8NPT.

Just saying that the two you pointed to above are M12x1.5 as are a lot of the aftermarket Bosch types. Why pick a relatively uncommon M10 thread fitting?
