    T9 into mk1 escort

    Hi all.
I have my pinto and t9 installed in my mk1 escort. I bought, naively I may add, what I thought would be all I needed to support the gearbox. Sooooo wrong. I see now that some sort of bracket will need made. Hmm. Does anyone know if such a bracket can be bought pre-engineered.
I bought the lowering kit 2 years back thinking this was all I needed. Lol, I'm suck a Nubie.
    Thanks all.

if you have the lowering blocks all you need is some steel strips, about 6mm thick, 19mm wide and about 75-100mm long, drill a few holes in the steel strips, bolt one end to the blocks and the other to the gearbox cross-member

Ok. I think I underestimated the gear box instalation. Its looking like I need to raise the box. And it looks like the only way is to cut the tunnel to lift it. Would this be the correct way of Installing it. The engine is sitting with about 10 degree slope and the the gearbox is indeed low. Whats the best way to approach this guys.

What bell housing are you using ? Sounds like it is catching further up the tunnel. A cast bell housing will need a little work to fit. A small adjustment at that area will mean a lot of movement at the far end

So there's no issue with the engine sloping back. It just looks awkward. Plus the rocker cover is hitting the lip in the bulkhead. Ive uploaded a video of the instalation on Instagram. Mk1_hillclimber

Wich enginemounts are you using, how thick/high are the rubbers? You might need to cut out the original brackets, but like Graham said, there is just some fabrication. Myself i cut them out and drilled holes in the floor and use the Sierra one.

I have a Sierra gearbox bracket. It doesn't come close to the floor. I reckon there's something going on here thats not right.

nothing like giving us all the information in the first place! my answer was based on you using a escort crossmember

not so much the hole for stick but the xmember for tail/ prop.

and a sierra xmember is not correct , get a std or better an auto one.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

hi guys and thanks so far. As a total newbie working on this car and this conversion I am relying heavily on others. I appreciate everyone's patience. My bad for not explaining in detail all the moving parts to each issue prior to posting. I will try to do better the next time. So, where am I at. I have the new hole for the gear stick drilled. I have found now that not a solution. after raising the box it was snagging. I have had the car on axle stand this morning and the following I have found.
    1. the original gearbox mounting points that are on the tunnel were hitting the seed of the T9. I have wiggled it to pass them. But the clearance is like 3mm each side. I think this is better removed with the angle grinder to achieve greater clearance.
    2. I have now jacked the box up and the tail end has reached its limit. Hitting the tunnel.
    3. Looking under the car, the gearbox is for me, still slung too low and a target for anything I drive over. Also, I believe that this angle will put some undue strain on the prop CV joint. this would wear and cause vibrations. i believe.
    4. In addition to this, the complete engine and box now are at an undesirable angle and the rocker cover now uncomfortably close to the horizontal bulkhead flang. This space will open if I raise the box.

So there we have it. I noted on retro ford site they supply a panel for exactly this conversion that will allow the raising of the box at the gear stick. So today I will get busy with the angle grinder and get everything at a more acceptable angle.
Now that is all planned out, the gearbox mounting bracket will be hopefully easier to address. And whether the part I bought is of any use, well I really don't know.
All photos attached showing the details mentioned.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

The engine / box angle look wrong - far too steep! Take some more material out of the floor crossmember where the stick goes through - this will raise the tail end of the gearbox and make the engine point less skyward. For example, the stick mounting plate on my T9 almost pokes through the hole in my RS.
Also if you have 50mm thick engine mounts you could try 38mm ones to change the angle, although this could conflict the sump with the x-member?

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

your absolutely right. And as for the engine mounts. the engine is as low as I dare have it for reasons you mentioned. these are the mounts I have installed. And yes, they are correctly sided. So lets get busy with the angle grinder.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

My bad. Totally focused on raising the box. Well basically, once i get the box to where I am happy with the position, I'll have to buy a gearbox mount. I think this is what you mean when you say cross member. What i bought now appears to be a paper weight. I see some universal mounts are available. If I could fabricate one myself it would be great. When parts like this are needed and i have to purchase from the UK and end up paying as much to ship it as to buy it. A wee bit annoying. If someone can recomend a really tough one, let me know please.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

no,sorry im referring to the xmember in shell - you need to cut a bigger chunk out - at least to rear of the oval hole in it and wide to clear tail og box - then as said above the box will go right up so stick flange is in the hole.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

It is a minefield of parts out there so I understand you are a little comfused. Ok, how much space do you have petween dump and engine crossmember? You do not need inches of space. It will be really tight in the tunnel with a type 9 and the original brackets in there. I cut mine out. I know you can leave them but then I think you have to mount the box solid to the shell to prevent it hitting them under load. And it is noisy.

    Re: T9 into mk1 escort

Thats exactly what I can Imagine. If only I had know before putting the box in I would have cut them out. Ahh. I can just Imagine it knocking about under there. This has been frustrating but great hands on experience. Now I am going through this I can help others in the future. That cant be a bad thin, can it.

Try and make something like this gearbox mount
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383792807385

It's a simple bit of steel folded into a channel - the channel needs to be long enough so you can bolt it through the floor on both sides with large washers or plates inside the car
Take the rubber mount from your gearbox cross member and put it in the middle and drill a large hole so you can access the centre bolt on the tailhousing

Also, it might be the angle of the picture, but the engine looks too high

I used the sierra cross member successfully with 1 inch spacers bolted through the floor. The bolts come through just either side of the trans tunnel inside. I also put some strengthening plates on the floor on the inside just to be safe. I did it this way as i also cut the original mounts off and it seemed easier than trying to re weld them back on.

Just like I did, Wildo. Welded the bolts on the strenghteningplates so I could tight them up from under the car on my one.

I have an auto tunnel now but still use the Sierra crossmember with mounts welded to the inside of the auto tunnel.

Thanks for all the coments here guys. Got the job done. The stuff I bought, including the lowering blocks were all useless. Tunel cut, box raised, original Sierra mount installed and bolted to the floor. Many thanks to all.
