Mk1 Escort Mexico Vin number query

Not getting very far to the answer to this mk1 Mexico vin number, if anyone has any thoughts?

1971 Mk1 Mexico with this vin format BSAT? my friend has received a copy of the original reg doc back from dvla states ford escort mk1 Mexico, is this a typo error when 1st registered.

Looks like S is sarrilous in Germany but you wouldn't have Britain county of origin but built in Germany?

    German cars start with 'D' ('G' - mk2's) and all? AVO Mk1's were UK cars (I believe) According to this . . . . .

    https://www.classicfordmag.co.uk/wp-...te-decoder.pdf

Possibly a 'B' for Halewood could have been misread wrong and hence the 'S' which doesn't appear anywhere?
As a Mk1 Mexico there should be a second AVO tag plate - without it, it could be a ringer / replica!

How early in 1971 was it registered ?., I can see at least one item under the bonnet that looks suspicious.

thats just plain silly - any car can be a ringer - but
90% of the tag plates were binned with slam panel changes in the 80's

Maybe, but would you buy a AVO car these days without the tags especially something as rare as a mk1 Mex?

The bulkhead has a Clutch Cable Tube and there are no pins for the cheese wedge washer bottle. Also the Drivers inner wing strut top has a non AVO repair panel fitted but the one on the passenger side doesn't look correct.

yes, there are far more important details to consider - see post above

i am probably more sympathetic than some to non original shells too as i grew up in a world of mk1 rs / mex etc being rolled in a welsh lane after midnight and to be honest no one cared back then if the reshell was type 49 or not
im sure we have all seen the odd mk1 on a mk2 plate or mk2 on a mk1 plate also ?
of course the value they now command means its worth buying the type 49 bits to add

but we digress - this thread is about the vin number not the shell ?

Re: Mk1 Escort Mexico Vin number query

I owned a 1971 Mexico a good few years ago with a chassis number discrepancy. One of the numbers was printed as an 8 on the log book but was actually a 5 on the chassis plate. I sent off for copies of all the previous logbooks from DVLA and discovered what had happened. The mistake was made at the point when the old type green logbook was replaced with the new upto date printed version in 1976. The person at DVLA must have mistaken a hand written 5 on the green logbook as an 8 when transferring the data.
I suspect the same has happened with the S on your friend’s logbook. The hand written F was mistaken as an S .

I have a feeling this is probably what has happened as dvla still have the original scanned handwritten v5 which is a scribbled mess, how to convince dvla to look into this is going to be interesting

DVLA were definitely on the lax side years ago. I've seen 4 doors changed to 2 doors, base models turned to RS models and 3-6 weeks later the log book comes back with no questions asked.

Same with driving licences, you could apply for one in any name and no checks done.

Yes there was almost zero scrutineering with requested changes to logbooks a few years ago. It’s a lot different now though.

I had a fiesta supersport some 30 years ago and it was a 1300 on the logbook i wrote them a letter and got new docs stating supersport. I only noticed this as my mate had a supersport and his docs stated that.

Re: Mk1 Escort Mexico Vin number query

In relation to the shell being suspicious regarding certain details, my Mexico has a cable clutch tube.
Back in the 80’s while I was competing in road rallies, I was sick of having problems with my hydraulic clutch, so I changed to cable. Hence, if I was to sell my car, it would probably be accused of a re-shell or ringer.
These cars are so old now, with numerous owners and back in the day we were young and did all sorts of crazy things to them.

Some of us are older now and still doing crazy things with the old Escorts.

We have to bear in mind that most Mk1's are now approaching 50 years old so I doubt any two are the same unless someone has gone into methodical detail with a couple of concourse one.

Back in the day Rally cars would be reshelled various times and would always run on the same registeration, even the Ford Motor Company did that with the Works Escorts. We had 4 different bodyshells that ran on the same Logbook, not at the same time I might add and in never bothered us as we could always prove where they came from and kept receipts for the money we spent.

I know of one competitor that ran a Mk2 and a G3 concurrently on the same registration, he even had two photos in Motoring News of both cars on different events on the same weekend with the same Reg.

Mk1 Escort Mexico Vin number query

I have a small photo album from the late 90s and giggled to myself on realising it has photos of 3 Mk2 Escorts all on the same plates!

I think from memory it was a spare set of plates with an MOT and would be shared around to keep people on the road when they'd otherwise fail an MOT.

You have to think back to that mindset where it wasn't deemed a particularly illegal thing to do.

I was once offered RS1600 tags and plate for £100 to use on my MK1 when a friend scrapped his genuine one.... I declined because I liked my car being a base model that I'd built to RS spec by myself, as opposed to people thinking I just bought it like that!
